What Is the Mit MB-01 16-Plate Heat Exchanger?

Heat exchangers are used in heating and cooling systems to transfer heat between two fluids. They are machines that allow different fluids to pass through opposite sides of the exchanger plates, transferring heat via the plates without the fluids mixing. They can be used to heat or cool water, oil, and similar liquids. To explain the basic principle for heating: water coming from a heat source such as a combi boiler enters and exits the first plate of the heat exchanger, while cold water from the system enters and exits through the second plate. As these two fluids pass through without mixing, the copper plates between them equalize their temperatures by transferring heat from one to the other. In other words, when two fluids — one hot, one cold — enter through the top connections of the heat exchanger, the temperatures of the fluids exiting through the bottom connections are nearly equal. You can see how it works in the diagram below.
