How do you set up an off-grid solar energy system?
Solar energy offers a practical solution for vacation homes, highland houses, caravans, agricultural land and construction sites that are not connected to the mains grid. In a typical battery-based system, solar panels feed the direct current (DC) they generate into a battery via a charge controller; the energy stored in the batteries is then converted to 220 V alternating current (AC) by a variable frequency drive (VFD) and supplied to the devices. For water pumping applications, it is also possible to build systems where the panels drive the pump directly without using a battery.
Category contents
- Solar panels: Energy generation with monocrystalline panels.
- Charge controllers: MPPT and PWM devices that safely charge the battery.
- Solar batteries: Gel and lithium batteries suitable for deep discharge.
- Inverters: Devices that convert battery energy to 220 V, including solar pump inverters.
- Solar water pumps: DC submersible and surface pumps, solar booster pump sets.
- Accessories: Solar cables, connectors, solar lighting, package systems and agricultural irrigation systems.
System sizing
The first step is to determine daily energy needs: multiply the power of each device to be used by its daily operating hours to find the total watt-hour requirement. Panel output is selected based on your region's peak sun hours and this requirement. Battery capacity is determined to cover the energy needed during nighttime hours and cloudy days. The inverter output must meet the combined power of all devices running simultaneously, including the starting current of motor-driven devices.
Installation recommendations
Panels should be positioned facing south, at an appropriate tilt, with no shading throughout the day. Cable cross-section on DC lines must be selected according to current and cable length; appropriate fuses and earthing must be used in the system. Having the installation carried out by qualified electricians is important for safety.
Frequently asked questions
Can a refrigerator run on solar energy?
Yes, with sufficient panels, a battery and a pure sine wave inverter of adequate output. The system should be sized according to the refrigerator's daily consumption.
Can a system be built without a battery?
For applications such as water pumping, systems that run directly from panels during the day without a battery can be built.
How much energy do panels produce?
Output depends on the panel's power rating, the region's peak sun hours, the season and the panel's orientation.
Does the system work in winter?
Yes; however, output decreases as daylight hours shorten. System sizing should account for this period.
Do panels need to be cleaned?
Dust and dirt reduce output. Wiping the surface with a soft cloth and water is sufficient.
Can I get support in choosing a system?
You can share the devices you plan to use and their daily operating hours via chat to receive support.
