What is a borehole submersible pump?

Borehole submersible pumps are multistage pumps designed to be slim and long enough to fit inside a well casing and draw water from boreholes. A submersible motor is located below the pump casing; it pressurizes the water step by step through the stages (impellers) and conveys it to the surface. As the number of stages increases, so does the head the pump can achieve. The most common applications are agricultural irrigation, drinking and utility water supply, industrial facilities, and the water needs of residential complexes.

Selection by well diameter

The first criterion is the inner diameter of the well casing. 3-inch (approximately 75 mm) pumps are used in narrow boreholes; 4-inch models are common in domestic, garden, and small agricultural wells; 6-inch and larger pumps are for agricultural and industrial wells requiring high flow rates. The "Compatible Borehole Casing" and "Pump Outer Diameter" details on the product pages show whether the pump will fit your well. Sufficient clearance must remain between the pump and the well wall for the water flow that cools the motor; in oversized wells, a cooling jacket can be used.

Flow rate, head, and power

Determine the flow rate you need (m³/h) and the total head (m) together. Total head is not the depth at which the pump is suspended; it is the sum of the dynamic water level during operation, the elevation of the tank or point of use, and pipe losses. The pump's operating point must fall within its efficient operating range where these two values intersect. Motor power is given in HP or kW (1 HP is approximately 0.75 kW); smaller powers use 220 V single-phase motors, while larger powers use 380 V three-phase motors.

Installation tips

Do not rest the pump on the bottom of the well; hang it high enough above the bottom to prevent sand and silt from being drawn in. Use riser pipe, a steel cable, and a submersible cable of the appropriate cross-section; insulate cable joints with waterproof splice kits. Using a pump protection panel against dry-run, voltage imbalance, and overcurrent extends motor life.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 4-inch pump fit a 4-inch well?

The term "4-inch" refers to the well class for which the pump is suitable. For a precise fit, compare the pump's outer diameter with the inner diameter of the well casing; both figures are provided on the product page.

If I buy a pump without a motor, which motor should I choose?

You should select a motor that matches the power and diameter values stated on the pump's nameplate; the connection dimensions must also be compatible. If you are unsure, send us the model code via our support team.

How deep should the pump be suspended in the well?

The pump should remain several meters below the lowest level to which the water may drop during operation, and should be kept away from the well bottom. The static and dynamic level data in the well report make this decision easier.

What can I do if I need a power rating or stage count not listed?

Different power ratings within the same multistage pump series are frequently requested. If you cannot find the model you need, you can request a quote from the product page or contact us via chat.
