What does a submersible motor do?
A submersible motor is an electric motor that is mounted below a borehole pump and insulated to operate underwater. It is selected separately for pump casings purchased without a motor or when a failed motor needs to be replaced. It is manufactured in sizes such as 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 inches according to well diameter. A correctly matched motor is a prerequisite for the pump to reach the flow rate and head values stated in its catalog.
Water-cooled or oil-cooled?
- Water-cooled (wet) motors: Filled internally with clean water. The windings are wound with water-resistant insulated wire, so they can usually be rewound; they are common in higher power ratings.
- Oil-cooled motors: Contain a special oil that provides cooling and lubrication. They have a sealed, compact design and are frequently used in the 4-inch class in particular.
Both types require water flow over the motor casing for cooling. If the pump will operate in a very large well or tank, fitting a cooling jacket around the motor is recommended.
What to consider when selecting a motor
- Power (HP/kW): Must match the power rating stated on the pump casing's nameplate.
- Diameter and connection: The motor flange and shaft dimensions must be compatible with the pump.
- Supply: 220 V single-phase motors operate with a capacitor; three-phase motors should be used with a control panel that includes phase protection.
- Starting method: For high-power three-phase motors, star-delta or soft-starter starting reduces the load on the power supply and mechanical components.
The current value on the motor nameplate is required for setting the correct thermal overload protection and fuse ratings inside the control panel. It is recommended to note this value before installation.
Frequently asked questions
Is the submersible motor cable purchased separately?
Most motors include a short connection cable. A submersible pump installation cable of the appropriate cross-section must be added separately for the section running up to the wellhead.
What should be done if the motor winding burns out?
Water-cooled motors can generally be rewound; the repair options for oil-cooled motors vary by model. Do not install a new motor without first identifying the cause of the failure (e.g., dry running, low voltage).
Which motor fits which pump?
Motors and pumps of the same diameter class can usually be connected to each other; still, compare the power and speed values. If you provide us with the model codes, we can check compatibility.
