Types of water filters
Water filters remove sand, rust, sediment, chlorine, and other unwanted substances from water, improving water quality and protecting pipework and appliances. Different filter types are used at building entry points, before meters, at booster set outlets, at combi boiler and washing machine inlets, and in water purification systems. The right filter choice depends on the type of problem present in the water.
Cartridge types
- Spun (PP) cartridges: Trap particles such as sand, rust, and sediment; the smaller the micron rating, the finer the particles captured.
- String-wound cartridges: Mechanical filters with high sediment-holding capacity.
- Carbon cartridges: Help reduce chlorine, odor, and taste issues.
- Resin cartridges: Used for softening to reduce water hardness; must be regenerated once capacity is exhausted.
- Siliphos cartridges: Generally used in domestic water lines to protect appliances from limescale; check the product description for suitability for drinking water.
- Washable filters: Stainless steel mesh filters that can be cleaned and reused.
Filter housing and connections
Filter housings are generally offered for 10-inch cartridge sizes and 1/2, 3/4, or 1-inch connection sizes; the cartridge and housing sizes must be compatible. In multi-stage systems, water passes first through a filter that traps coarse particles, then through progressively finer filters. In booster pump systems, placing the filter on the suction side of the pump can make priming harder, so the filter is usually installed on the discharge side. Fitting valves before and after the filter makes cartridge changes easier.
Maintenance
Cartridge replacement intervals depend on water quality and consumption; a pressure drop after the filter and darkening of the cartridge color indicate that replacement is due. The filter housing and O-rings should be cleaned during each replacement, and a suitable lubricant applied to the O-ring. Cartridges that are not replaced for a long time can negatively affect water quality.
Frequently asked questions
What does the micron rating mean?
It indicates the particle size the filter can capture; the smaller the value, the finer the particles the filter traps.
How often should the cartridge be replaced?
It varies with water quality and usage; a pressure drop is a key indicator.
Is a siliphos filter suitable for drinking water?
Suitability varies by product; check the product description.
Which filter should be installed at the building entry point?
A mechanical filter or washable filter for sand and sediment is generally preferred.
What does a resin cartridge do?
It helps reduce water hardness; it must be regenerated once capacity is exhausted.
Are replacement filters for RO systems available here?
Yes; replacement cartridges for reverse osmosis (RO) systems are also included in this category.
