What does a pump protection and control panel do?

A pump control panel is an electrical enclosure that houses the switching components that start and stop the pump, motor protection devices, and control circuits. The most common causes of failure in submersible pump and booster pump motors are dry running, overcurrent, low or high voltage, and phase loss. A correctly selected panel detects these conditions and stops the motor in time, preventing costly repairs.

Panel types

What to consider when choosing

The power range of the panel must cover the HP or kW rating on the motor nameplate. A single-phase panel is selected for a single-phase (220 V) motor, and a three-phase panel for a three-phase (380 V) motor. The thermal overload setting must be adjusted to the motor's rated current. If the panel will be used in a well, choose a model with a level electrode connection; if it will be installed outdoors, choose a panel with an appropriate protection rating against rain and dust.

Frequently asked questions

Can a submersible pump be run without a panel?

Some small pumps can operate directly via a plug, but without protection, dry running and voltage problems can burn out the motor in a short time. A protection panel eliminates a major risk at low cost.

Is the capacitor inside the panel for a single-phase pump?

In some single-phase submersible motors, the capacitor is located inside the panel or control box. Check your motor's wiring diagram to select the appropriate panel.

Is a separate panel required for a booster pump?

A panel is generally not required for small single-pump domestic booster pumps. For multi-pump booster sets, however, a control panel that brings the pumps online in sequence is used.

What information is shown on the digital panel display?

Although it varies by model, the motor's current draw, mains voltage, operating status, and fault codes can be monitored. This information makes it easier to determine whether a problem originates from the pump or from the electrical installation.
