What is a monocrystalline solar panel?
Solar panels are photovoltaic modules that convert the sunlight falling on them into direct current (DC) electricity. Monocrystalline panels are made from single-crystal silicon cells and deliver high efficiency per unit area. The 100 and 110 W panels in this category are suitable for off-grid systems such as cabins, caravans, boats, small solar pump systems, camera and lighting applications.
Panel label values
- Power (W): The maximum power the panel can produce under standard test conditions.
- Operating voltage (Vmp) and current (Imp): The values at the panel's maximum power point.
- Open-circuit voltage (Voc): The highest voltage the panel produces when no load is connected; it must not exceed the input limit of the charge controller.
- Short-circuit current (Isc): Taken into account when selecting fuses and cables.
The actual power produced by the panel under real conditions may differ from the label value depending on the sun angle, temperature, and shading.
Connection and installation
When panels are connected in series, their voltages add up; when connected in parallel, their currents add up. The connection method must be determined according to the input voltage range of the charge controller or pump controller being used. Panels should be positioned facing south with an appropriate tilt angle, free from shade throughout the day; even shade falling on a single cell can significantly reduce the panel's output. Solar cables and MC4 connectors should be used for connections.
Maintenance
Dust, pollen, and bird droppings on the panel surface reduce output; the surface should be cleaned with a soft cloth and water. Abrasive materials must not be used. The mounting structure and cable connections should be inspected regularly, especially in windy areas.
Frequently asked questions
How much energy does a 100 W panel produce per day?
Output depends on the hours of sunshine and the season. An approximate value can be calculated by multiplying the panel power by the effective hours of sunlight.
Can the panel be connected directly to the battery?
It should not be; a charge controller must always be used to protect the battery.
Should I connect in series or parallel?
This is determined by the input voltage and current limits of your controller.
How many years does a panel last?
Solar panels are designed to be used for many years; output decreases slowly over time.
Can it be used in a caravan?
Yes; it can be mounted on a caravan roof with suitable mounting brackets.
What should the panel tilt angle be?
It varies depending on your location and the season of use; a moderate tilt is preferred for year-round use.
