What is solar lighting?
Solar lighting products are lighting solutions with a built-in battery that charges via a solar panel during the day, providing light at night without needing a mains electricity connection. They offer a practical solution in places where running cables is difficult or costly, such as garden and roadside lighting, cabin and storage entrances, parking lots and perimeter security, and agricultural and livestock areas.
Product types
- Solar floodlights: Models with a panel and remote control for illuminating large areas.
- Solar bulbs: 12 V DC bulbs used with a panel and battery.
- High-power solar lights: For yard and open-area illumination.
- Solar garden fixtures: Garden lighting with decorative and colored light options.
Many models feature a light sensor that automatically turns on the light when it gets dark; this feature is noted in the product description.
Selection recommendations
Light output should be chosen according to the size of the area to be illuminated; high-power floodlights are suitable for large areas, while garden fixtures are appropriate for walkways and decorative use. Since the watt values stated on products may be given using different criteria from model to model, it is more reliable to use the luminous flux (lumen) figure when available for comparison. Positioning the panel where it receives direct sunlight throughout the day is important for adequate illumination during the night.
Installation and maintenance
The panel should be positioned facing south, free from shade; tree shade significantly reduces charging. The panel surface should be cleaned periodically. In winter, lighting duration may decrease due to shorter daylight hours. For battery-powered products, whether the battery can be replaced when it reaches the end of its life can be checked in the product information.
Frequently asked questions
Does a solar floodlight stay on all night?
If it has charged sufficiently during the day, it will generally operate throughout the night; the duration varies by season and weather conditions.
Is cabling required?
No mains cabling is needed other than the short cable between the panel and the lamp.
Does it work in the rain?
Models designed for outdoor use are protected against rain.
What does the remote control do?
It is used to adjust the light level, operating mode, and timer.
Does performance drop in winter?
Charging and lighting duration may decrease due to shorter daylight hours.
What is needed to light an entire cabin with solar power?
