What is a solar water pump?
Solar water pumps are pumps that draw their energy from solar panels and can pump water without needing mains electricity. They offer an economical and quiet solution for irrigation, livestock watering and tank filling on fields, vineyards, gardens and pastures where no power line is available. Since no fuel is required, operating costs are low.
Pump types
- Solar DC submersible pumps: For drawing water from wells; models suitable for well diameters such as 3 and 4 inch.
- Solar DC surface pumps and booster pump sets: For pumping water from tanks, ponds or channels and providing pressure inside buildings.
- Panel-set models: Packages in which the pump, controller and compatible panels are supplied together.
- Solar inverter solution for AC pumps: Running existing AC pumps from solar energy using a solar pump inverter.
Brushless DC motors have no brushes that wear out, resulting in long service life and high efficiency.
Choosing the right system
Daily water requirement (m³), water level in the well and the head to which the water must be pumped are the determining factors. The flow rate of solar pumps varies throughout the day with the intensity of sunlight; therefore, storing water in a tank is a more economical method than using a battery. Panel output must be matched to the pump's power, and panel voltage must be selected to fall within the input range of the pump's controller. The well diameter and the pump's outer diameter must also be compatible.
Installation and maintenance
Panels must be installed on a shadow-free south-facing surface and secured to a sturdy structure that can withstand wind. For submersible pumps, a level sensor or the relevant feature of the controller should be used for dry-run protection. Panel surfaces should be cleaned regularly and cable connections inspected.

Does the pump work in cloudy weather?
When light decreases, the pump's flow rate drops; in heavy overcast, the pump may stop.
Is it possible to pump water at night?
It is possible with a battery-based system. However, for most irrigation applications it is more economical to pump water into a storage tank during the day.
What panel output is required?
It is determined by the pump's power and the controller's voltage range. Panel-set models come with compatible panels included.
What is the advantage of a brushless motor?
Since there is no brush (carbon) wear, maintenance requirements are minimal and efficiency is high.
Can I run my existing pump on solar energy?
Many AC pumps can be operated with a solar pump inverter of sufficient output and enough panels.
