What are fittings?

Fittings is the general term for threaded connection pieces used to join pipes, change direction, branch a line, or change diameter. Almost all pump, booster pump, and plumbing installations require various fitting components. This category brings together the most frequently used connection pieces along with line components such as valves, check valves, and strainers.

Material and size selection

Galvanised fittings are made from zinc-coated steel and are an economical solution. Brass fittings are made from brass; they are more resistant to corrosion and are particularly preferred for drinking water and hot water lines. The most common sizes are 1/2, 3/4, and 1 inch; whether a piece has a female or male thread also determines the connection. Bear in mind that corrosion can develop over time at points where different metals are directly joined; use the same material throughout where possible.

Installation recommendations

For threaded connections, PTFE tape should be wrapped in the direction of the thread and enough layers applied to cover the threads. Over-tightening parts can damage the threads and body; controlled tightening is especially important for brass parts. Once connections are complete, the line should be pressurised and checked for leaks. Using unions at points that may need to be disassembled makes future maintenance easier.

Frequently asked questions

Does the inch size refer to the pipe's outer diameter?

Inch sizes used in plumbing are nominal values and do not correspond exactly to the actual outer diameter of the pipe; compare the thread of the fitting with the thread of the pipe to ensure compatibility.

Can brass fittings be used with hot water?

Yes; brass fittings are widely used in hot water lines.

Can galvanised fittings be used with drinking water?

They can be used; however, due to the long-term risk of corrosion, many users prefer brass components.

In which connections should I use a union?

Using unions at the connections of components such as pumps, filters, and valves that may need to be removed later makes maintenance easier.

How many turns of PTFE tape are needed?

It varies depending on the thread diameter and tape thickness; the connection should be at a point where it can be started by hand and tightened with a wrench.

What should I pay attention to when ordering fittings?

Check the size, whether each piece has female or male threads, and the material; don't forget to add PTFE tape to your order for use during installation.
