What is an elbow?
An elbow is a fitting used to change the direction of a pipe run. The most common models are 90-degree elbows; other angles and connection types are also available. Elbows are needed in almost every installation — from pump outlet to tank, from tank to pipework, from meter to faucet. This category includes galvanized and brass elbows as well as tailed elbows.
Elbow types
- Female elbows: Female threads on both ends; for connecting two pipes or nipples.
- Male-female elbows: One end with male thread; for screwing directly onto a component to change direction.
- Tailed elbows: Models with mounting ears used at faucet and mixer outlets to be fixed to the wall.
- Galvanized elbows: An economical and widely available solution.
- Brass elbows: More corrosion-resistant; for drinking water and hot water lines.
Choosing the right elbow
The elbow size must match the thread size of the pipe or component being connected; 1/2, 3/4, and 1 inch are the most common sizes. On pump suction lines where flow matters, the number of elbows should be minimized; each elbow creates a small friction loss. On suction lines, wide-radius bends should be preferred over sharp turns where possible. Using components of the same material avoids galvanic corrosion that can result from directly connecting dissimilar metals.
Installation
PTFE tape is wrapped on the threads before making the connection; the tape should be wrapped in the direction of the thread turn. It may be necessary to finish tightening half a turn to point the elbow in the desired direction; loosening it back is not recommended as it can cause leaks. Overtightening on brass elbows can crack the body. After installation, pressurize the line to check for leaks.
Frequently asked questions
Can galvanized and brass elbows be used together?
They can; however, corrosion may develop over time at points where dissimilar metals are in contact.
Where is a tailed elbow used?
It is used at wall-mounted faucet, mixer, and washing machine outlets.
Does an elbow reduce flow?
Each elbow causes a small loss; reducing the number of elbows on the pump suction line is especially important.
Which size should I get?
Check the thread size of the pipe or component to be connected; if unsure, measure the existing part and compare.
