What is a cone union?

A cone union is a three-part fitting that connects two pipes or a pipe to an appliance in a way that allows the line to be disconnected and reconnected. The two halves of the body seat against each other via their tapered surfaces, and when the central nut is tightened, a leak-free connection is formed. When the nut is loosened, the two halves separate and the connection can be undone without rotating the pipes. This feature makes it much easier to connect components that may need to be removed later, such as pumps, valves, filters, and meters.

Where should they be used?

Using cone unions at pump inlets and outlets, booster pump and filter connections, before and after meters, and at hot water boiler and hot water cylinder connections makes servicing and replacement easier. Cone-face unions can provide a seal without a gasket compared to flat-face unions; however, the seating surfaces must be clean and undamaged. When replacing a circulation pump with unions, a union set matching the pump's connection size must be used.

Installation tips

The threaded ends of the union are connected with PTFE tape; the cone surfaces must be kept clean and dry. Before tightening the nut, ensure the two bodies are aligned on the same axis; an angled connection will cause leaks. The nut must not be overtightened; if there is a leak, check the alignment first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a cone union and a flat union?

In a cone union, the seal is achieved by metal tapered surfaces; in a flat union, it is achieved by a gasket placed between the faces.

What should I do if a union is leaking?

Check the alignment, loosen the nut and reseat it; if the surface is damaged, replace the union.

Does a radiator union fit every radiator?

It must be compatible with the radiator's connection size and valve type; check the size.

Can a galvanized union be used in hot water?

Yes; however, brass unions last longer in hot water lines.

What size is the circulation pump union set?

It must be selected according to the pump's connection size; check the product description.

How many times can a cone union be disconnected and reconnected?

It can be used many times as long as the surfaces are not damaged; check that the surfaces are clean and scratch-free each time you disconnect it.
