What does a foot valve do?

A foot valve is a strainer check valve fitted to the end of the suction pipe that is submerged in the water source on suction pumps. When the pump stops, it prevents the water in the suction pipe from flowing back, keeping the pipe and pump casing filled with water. This allows the pump to prime and draw water on every start without needing to re-prime. The strainer on the valve also prevents leaves, stones, and large particles from entering the pump.

Where are they used?

When the pump is installed below the water level (where water flows to the pump by gravity), a foot valve may not be needed; installing a valve on the suction line is sufficient in that case.

Selection and installation

The diameter of the foot valve must match the diameter of the suction pipe; a smaller valve will restrict suction. Full-bore models offer less resistance to flow. The valve should be positioned sufficiently above the bottom of the well or tank to avoid mud and sediment, while also remaining submerged even when the water level is at its lowest; otherwise the pump will draw air.

Maintenance

The strainer can become clogged with leaves and sediment over time; when a drop in flow rate is noticed, the valve should be removed and cleaned. If the suction line is observed to empty every time the pump stops, the valve gasket or spring may be worn; in this case the valve should be cleaned or replaced.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my pump lose its prime every time?

A leaking foot valve or an air leak in the suction line are the most common causes.

Is a foot valve the same as a check valve?

A foot valve is a type of check valve with a strainer, used at the suction end.

Brass or plastic?

Brass foot valves are durable and long-lasting; the choice can be made based on water conditions and budget.

Does a foot valve reduce water flow?

It creates a small amount of resistance; selecting a full-bore model sized to match the pipe diameter minimizes losses.

How deep should it be placed in the well?

It should be below the lowest water level but at sufficient height above the bottom of the well.

Why is the foot valve spring important?

The spring ensures the valve closes quickly when the pump stops; a weakened spring can allow some water to flow back, causing the pump to lose its prime.
