What is a tee?
A tee is a fitting named after its T-shaped form, used to branch a side line off a main pipeline. It is used to draw water from the main line to a tap, an appliance, or a second line, and to connect measuring and control elements such as pressure gauges or switches. It is frequently needed in pump and booster pump installations, in building manifolds, and in irrigation lines.
Types of tee
- Equal tee: Standard models with all three ports the same size.
- Reducing tee: Models where the side outlet is a different size from the main line.
- Galvanized tee: For economical and general use.
- Brass tee: Corrosion-resistant; for drinking water and hot water lines.
The category also includes auxiliary parts used in fixture connections, such as nickel-plated brass perforated extensions.
Choosing the right tee
Start by identifying the main line and side outlet sizes. In booster pump installations where multiple connections need to be made next to the tank, using a five-way connector instead of separate tees and nipples provides a more compact and leak-free solution. Selecting pipe diameters at flow-splitting points according to demand reduces pressure drop at distant points. Brass tees should be preferred on hot water lines.
Installation recommendations
Plan the orientation of the parts to be connected to the tee's ports in advance; loosening a threaded fitting to reposition it increases the risk of leaks. Wrap PTFE tape on each port in the direction of the thread rotation. After installation is complete, pressurize the line and check all connection points. Unused outlets must be closed with a suitable plug.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a tee and a five-way connector?
A tee has three ports; a five-way connector combines five ports in a single body for the booster pump tank.
When is a reducing tee needed?
It is used when a smaller-diameter side line or appliance connection needs to branch off the main line.
Does a galvanized tee rust?
The zinc coating delays corrosion; however, rusting can occur over time, especially in hot water.
What is a perforated extension used for?
It is used in fixture connections to bring the line forward and provide an additional outlet.
Where can I find other fittings?
For elbows, couplings, and nipples, see the fittings and materials category.
