What is a Y-strainer?

A Y-strainer (Y-type strainer) is a plumbing component that traps solid particles such as sand, rust, weld residue, and sediment from the water line using a screen inside its body. It is installed upstream of pumps, pressure reducers, check valves, solenoid valves, meters, and heating equipment to protect these sensitive components from damage. Its Y-shaped body allows the screen compartment to be easily opened and cleaned.

Where should it be used?

Using a Y-strainer is especially important in newly installed pipework, as chips and residue remaining inside the pipes can damage sensitive components on first start-up.

Installation recommendations

The Y-strainer should be installed with the arrow on the body pointing in the direction of flow. On horizontal lines, the screen compartment should face downward so that trapped particles collect in that compartment. Installing valves before and after the Y-strainer is recommended for ease of cleaning. The screen mesh size should be selected to suit the sensitivity of the equipment being protected.

Maintenance

A clogged screen reduces flow and increases pressure loss. The Y-strainer should be checked when a drop in pump flow rate or system pressure is noticed. To clean it, close the valves, open the screen cap, remove the screen, rinse it with water, and refit it. Make sure the gasket is seated correctly.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a Y-strainer be cleaned?

It depends on water quality; more frequent checks are recommended during the first few weeks in new installations.

Does a Y-strainer reduce pressure?

A clean screen causes a small loss; the loss increases as it becomes clogged.

Can it be installed on a vertical line?

It can also be installed on vertical lines with flow going from top to bottom; check the product information.

Can it be used instead of a filter?

It provides protection against large particles; water filters may be needed for fine sediment and sand.

Which size should I choose?

A Y-strainer of the same size as the pipe diameter should be selected.

How is the screen mesh size selected?

It is selected according to the filtration level recommended by the manufacturer of the equipment being protected. A very fine mesh clogs more frequently; a very coarse mesh may allow small particles through.

Can a Y-strainer damage the installation?

When the correct size is selected and it is cleaned regularly, it does not damage the installation; on the contrary, it protects pumps and valves.
