What is a solenoid valve?

A solenoid valve is a valve that automatically opens or closes the passage of a fluid with the help of an electromagnet (coil). When the coil is energized, the resulting magnetic field attracts the movable core inside the valve, opening or closing the flow path. They are used wherever flow needs to be controlled remotely or automatically — from water purifiers and irrigation systems to boilers, compressors, and industrial machinery.

Key concepts

The subcategories in this category include general purpose, steam, compressor, and pulse jet solenoid valves.

Selection criteria

The type and temperature of the fluid determine the valve body and seal material; general purpose valves are used for water and air, while high-temperature-resistant valves are used for steam. The pressure range in the line affects the choice between direct-acting and pilot-operated: direct-acting valves are preferred on lines where pressure may be very low. The connection size must match the pipe diameter, and the coil voltage must be compatible with the control circuit (e.g., 12 V DC, 24 V DC, 110 V AC, 220 V AC).

Installation and maintenance

The valve must be installed in the direction of the flow arrow on the body, and a Y-strainer must be placed upstream; sand and sediment are the most common cause of the valve failing to close fully. The coil should be mounted facing upward where possible. The coil must not be covered, so that it can dissipate heat.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't the valve close fully?

Dirt may have entered the seal or the seal may be worn. In pilot-operated valves, insufficient pressure differential can also cause this.

Why is the coil getting hot?

Some heating of coils during operation is normal. Excessive heat may result from incorrect voltage or from the coil being covered.

Direct-acting or pilot-operated?

Direct-acting valves are suitable for low-pressure or pressureless lines; pilot-operated valves are suitable for high-flow lines with adequate pressure.

Can the coil be replaced separately?

In many models, the coil is replaceable. A coil of the same voltage and type must be selected.

Can a solenoid valve cause water hammer?

Fast closing can cause hammer in long water lines. Line design and appropriate valve selection reduce this effect.

Which seal material should be chosen?

The seal material appropriate for the fluid type and temperature is stated in the product information. If you are unsure, contact us with the fluid details.
