What is a steam solenoid valve?
Steam solenoid valves are valves designed for automatic open/close control of steam and high-temperature fluids. Because the seal materials used in standard solenoid valves deteriorate quickly at steam temperatures, steam valves use high-temperature-resistant seals and coils. Main application areas include ironing and pressing machines, laundries, steam boilers, sterilization equipment, food processing lines, and textile machinery.
Model types
- Direct-acting steam valves: Operate on small-bore lines without requiring a pressure differential.
- Pilot-operated steam valves: For high flow rates on large-bore lines; require a minimum pressure differential to operate.
- Normally closed and normally open models: The de-energized position is selected according to the application requirement.
Connection sizes in product names (e.g., 1/8 inch) and NO/NC designations make model selection easier.
Selection criteria
The maximum fluid temperature and pressure permitted by the valve must meet the operating conditions of the steam line. On lines where steam pressure is low or can drop to zero, direct-acting valves operate more reliably. The coil voltage must be matched to the control circuit, and the coil must be verified to be suitable for the high-temperature environment.
Installation and maintenance
A Y-strainer should be installed upstream of the valve on steam lines, and condensate drain elements (steam traps) should be used at appropriate points; condensed water can cause water hammer and wear in the valve. The valve should be mounted with the coil facing upward, and the coil must not be covered with insulation material. Ensure the line is completely cool and depressurized before installation. On valves that begin to leak over time, the seal and seat should be inspected.
Frequently asked questions
Can a general-purpose valve be used on a steam line?
It should not be used. Steam temperatures cause standard seals to deteriorate in a short time.
Why is the steam valve causing water hammer?
Condensate accumulated in the line can cause water hammer when the valve opens. Check that the condensate drain is working correctly.
Which valve for an ironing table?
Small-bore, direct-acting steam valves are generally suitable for such applications.
Can the coil be damaged by heat?
Coils used in steam valves are designed for high temperatures. Even so, the coil must be ventilated.
What should I pay attention to during maintenance?
The line must be depressurized and cold, and protective gloves must be worn.
Which solenoid valves are available for water and air lines?
For these lines, see general-purpose solenoid valves.
