What is a ball valve?

A ball valve is a valve that opens or closes flow by rotating a drilled ball inside the body by a quarter turn. Thanks to its ease of use, fast shut-off, and tight seal, it is the most widely used valve type in water plumbing systems. It is used to isolate flow at pump inlets and outlets, booster pump connections, meter inlets, riser lines, and appliance connections.

Selection criteria

The valve size must match the pipeline. Full-bore valves should be preferred on pump suction and discharge lines; reduced-bore valves decrease flow rate. The pressure class (PN rating) must be above the maximum system pressure. Temperature resistance of the valve should be checked for hot water lines. Choosing a valve whose handle can be turned freely at the installation point ensures ease of use.

Installation and use

Ball valves can be installed regardless of flow direction; on check valve models, the arrow direction must be observed. Leaving a valve in a half-open position for extended periods can wear the seat surfaces; ball valves are designed for open/close operation. Valves left unused for a long time may seize; operating them a few times a year prevents this.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a ball valve and a gate valve?

A ball valve opens and closes with a quarter turn and provides a high degree of tightness; a gate valve opens and closes with several turns using a sliding mechanism.

Why does a full-bore valve matter?

Its low resistance to flow prevents flow rate loss in pump lines.

What should I do if the valve stem is leaking?

The gland nut beneath the handle can be gently tightened; if the leak persists, the valve should be replaced.

Where is a check valve ball valve used?

It is used in booster pump and pump connections to provide both shut-off and backflow prevention in a single fitting.

In which lines are flanged valves used?

They are preferred on large-diameter industrial, irrigation, and building main lines.
