What is a drainage submersible pump?
Drainage submersible pumps are dewatering pumps that are lowered into the water to drain flooded basements, elevator pits, pools, construction excavations, and manholes. They have lower head compared to borehole pumps but higher flow rate. Most models are portable and can easily be lowered to the required location by means of a handle.
The right pump for the type of water
- Clean water submersible pumps: For water with few solid particles, such as rainwater, pool water, and tank water.
- Dirty water submersible pumps: For muddy, sandy, or small-particle water; fitted with wide-passage or vortex impellers.
- Sewage submersible pumps: Pumps sewage and wastewater together with the solids it contains.
- Cutter submersible pumps: Shred fibrous waste and convey it over long distances through small-diameter pipes.
- Stainless steel drainage pumps: For corrosive environments and long-term use.
- Agitator sludge pumps: Stir up settled sludge from the bottom and drain it simultaneously.
Selection criteria
The maximum solid particle size the pump can pass — i.e., solids handling — must match the type of water. When determining flow rate, consider the volume of water to be drained and the time in which it needs to be emptied; for head, factor in the height of the discharge point and the hose length. For a pit with a continuous water inflow, choose a float switch model for automatic operation. Single-phase models that run on household current meet most residential needs; for construction sites and industrial applications, three-phase, high-power models stand out.
Use and maintenance
Do not leave the pump buried directly in mud; place it on a flat stone or grate whenever possible. After pumping dirty water, running the pump briefly in clean water removes sediment from the impeller and casing. The float switch must not be restricted in its range of movement, and the cable and lifting rope must not be drawn into the pump's inlet.
Frequently asked questions
What does a float switch pump do?
It starts the pump automatically when the water level rises and stops it when the level drops. This way the pump never runs dry and you do not need to stand watch.
Can a drainage pump draw water down to the very bottom?
Standard models leave a small amount of water at the base. For jobs that require drawing water down to a very low level on a flat surface, look for models described as "zero-level suction."
Which pump is suitable for draining a pool?
A clean water submersible pump or a drainage pump with a stainless steel casing is sufficient for pool water. If you want to shorten the draining time, compare models with higher flow rates.
