What is an agitator sludge pump?
Agitator sludge pumps use an agitator blade fitted to the end of the shaft to re-suspend sludge, sand, and sediment that has settled beneath the pump, then discharge it together with the water. While standard drainage pumps often leave dense sediment that has accumulated at the bottom behind, agitator models keep this sediment in suspension so that it can be discharged.
Applications
- Muddy water accumulated in construction foundation excavations and bored pile operations
- Settling ponds in mines and quarries
- Sludge chambers and equalization basins in wastewater treatment plants
- Sand and gravel washing facilities, concrete batching plants
- Liquid manure at agricultural and livestock facilities
Selection and installation
Pumps in this class are generally produced as high-power, three-phase (380 V) units for dense and abrasive liquids. In selection, the solids content and particle size, head, and outlet diameter must all be evaluated together. The impeller and casing material's resistance to wear is decisive for extended operation. The pump should be suspended by a chain so that it does not become buried in the bottom, and positioned at a height that allows the agitator to reach the sludge layer. Avoiding sharp elbows on the discharge line reduces the risk of sludge settling inside the pipe.
Maintenance recommendations
Since agitator pumps operate in abrasive environments, the impeller, agitator blade, and wear plate should be inspected at regular intervals. A noticeable drop in head or flow rate is the first sign of wear. The oil chamber and mechanical seal should be checked at the operating hours recommended by the manufacturer. Running the pump briefly in clean water after use prevents residual sludge inside from hardening.
Frequently asked questions
Can sludge be pumped without an agitator?
Dirty water submersible pumps can be used for fluid, muddy water. If there is dense sediment trapped at the bottom, an agitator model will complete the same job in less time.
Do these pumps run on single-phase power?
Most models in this category operate on three-phase (380 V) supply. If no three-phase line is available on site, select a generator rated for the pump's starting current.
Are they suitable for extended operation?
Models described as industrial type are designed for extended operation. A control panel with appropriate thermal overload protection should still be used to protect the motor.
How long can the hose on a sludge pump be?
Friction losses increase as the hose gets longer, reducing the pump's flow rate. For long runs, use a large-diameter, non-collapsible hose or rigid pipe.
