What is a cutter submersible pump?
Cutter (grinder) submersible pumps reduce fibrous and solid matter in wastewater using a cutting blade system at the inlet before pumping it. The macerated waste can then be conveyed over long distances and to elevated points through smaller-diameter pipes. They are therefore suitable for basements, detached houses, site cabins, and small wastewater lift stations where the sewer line is far from or above the pump location.
When should a cutter model be selected?
If wet wipes, rags, sanitary pads, or plastic pieces may be present in the wastewater, standard pumps can eventually clog; cutter models reduce this risk. However, in water containing large hard solids such as stones or metal pieces, the blades can be damaged. For such environments, wide-passage sewage pumps are a better choice.
How are the technical values read?
- Head (m): Grinder pumps are mostly designed for low flow rate and high pressure; they are used in pressurized wastewater lines.
- Outlet size: A narrow outlet diameter allows the installation of small-diameter pressure lines.
- Power and phase: Single-phase models are for residential use; three-phase models are for commercial and industrial applications.
Adding a check valve to the outlet line during installation and lowering the pump on a suspension chain makes maintenance easier.
Maintenance
The gap between the blade and counter-blade can widen over time; if you notice a drop in pressure or flow rate, have these parts inspected. Oil, sand, and sediment accumulating in the sump where the pump is located should be cleaned regularly.

Can a cutter pump handle toilet waste?
Yes; grinding and pumping sewage is the primary intended use of these pumps. Remember to fit a check valve on the outlet line.
Are a cutter pump and a macerator pump the same thing?
They operate on a similar principle. Macerator pumps are generally small 12/24 V models used in boat and caravan waste tanks; the products in this category are intended for building and facility wastewater.
Is a single-phase cutter pump sufficient?
It is usually sufficient for a single residence or a small business. Check the product's performance values for long and high-pressure discharge lines.
What pipe connects to the outlet of a cutter pump?
Pressure-rated PE or PVC pipe matching the outlet size can be used. For long runs, do not reduce the pipe diameter below the manufacturer's recommended value.
