What does a dirty water submersible pump do?

Dirty water submersible pumps are used to drain water containing suspended solids, sand, or mud. The most common applications include muddy water accumulated after flooding, groundwater at excavation and construction sites, car park and garage drainage sumps, wash-down areas, and industrial process water. Their difference from clean water pumps is the use of wider-passage impellers and more durable materials.

The advantage of a vortex impeller

In vortex impeller pumps, the impeller is recessed inside the casing. Because the water is carried by the vortex created by the impeller, solid particles come into less contact with it. This design reduces the risk of clogging and wear, extending pump life especially in sandy and fibrous water. Although efficiency is slightly lower than open impeller models, reliability is more important in dirty water applications.

What to look for when selecting

Frequently asked questions

Can a dirty water pump handle sewage?

It may be suitable for mildly contaminated gray water; for water containing toilet waste, a sewage or cutter submersible pump should be used.

Why does a pump wear out quickly in sandy water?

Sand is abrasive and gradually wears down the impeller and casing surfaces. Choosing a vortex impeller model and keeping the pump above the sand layer at the bottom reduces wear.

Can a dirty water pump be used with clean water?

It can. However, if only clean water will be pumped, clean water pumps delivering higher efficiency at the same power are more advantageous in terms of energy consumption.

What hose should be used with a dirty water pump?

Choose a flat or spiral hose of the same diameter as the pump's outlet that is resistant to kinking. A narrow hose both reduces flow rate and can cause solid particles to get stuck inside the hose.

What happens if the pump gets stuck in mud?

The impeller and inlet screen clog so the pump cannot discharge water, and the motor may also overheat. Placing the pump on a base plate or suspending it on a chain reduces this risk.
