Where is a sewage pump used?

Sewage pumps are designed to pump wastewater — along with the solids it contains — from septic tanks, from basement toilets, and from areas below the sewer level. They are widely used in residential and apartment manholes, hotels and restaurants, industrial facility wastewater collection sumps, and at the inlets of treatment plants.

Structural features

The impeller of these pumps is designed with a wide passage to prevent clogging. In vortex impeller models, wastewater is carried by the vortex effect without coming into direct contact with the impeller, reducing the risk of wear and clogging; open or channel impeller models operate at higher efficiency. A cast iron casing provides durability and also helps the pump stay balanced in wastewater due to its weight. For wastewater containing fibrous material and cloth particles, cutter submersible pumps are more suitable.

Selection criteria

For installations inside a manhole, fitting a check valve and a gate valve on the outlet line prevents wastewater from flowing back when the pump stops and allows you to isolate the line during maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Can a sewage pump run continuously?

Continuous run time varies by model; check the duty type and fluid temperature information on the product page. Intermittent operation with a float switch protects the motor.

Can a sewage pump be used for clean water?

It can; however, clean water submersible pumps, which offer higher efficiency in clean water, are a more economical choice.

Why does a sewage pump clog?

Wet wipes, rags, and similar fibrous waste are the most common causes. Use a cutter model in locations where such waste may be present, and have the manhole cleaned at regular intervals.

What size sump is required for a sewage pump?

The sump should be large enough to prevent the pump from cycling on and off too frequently. Sufficient width for the float switch to move freely and sufficient depth for the pump to sit slightly above the bottom must be provided; the appropriate dimensions vary according to the pump's flow rate.
