What is a pressure switch?
A pressure switch is an electromechanical device that starts and stops the pump based on system pressure. When a tap is opened and the pressure drops to the set lower value (cut-in pressure), it closes its contacts to start the pump; when the pressure reaches the upper value (cut-out pressure), it opens its contacts to stop the pump. In addition to booster pump applications, it is also used in compressors and some process applications.
Types of pressure switches
- Mechanical pressure switches: Widely used, economical models that operate with a spring and diaphragm mechanism.
- Digital pressure switches: Display pressure on a screen and offer precise adjustment and additional protection functions.
- Single-phase and three-phase models: Selected according to the supply type of the pump motor.
- Five-port and pressure gauge sets: Supply the switch together with fittings and a pressure gauge for easier installation.
- Industrial pressure switches: For applications requiring wider adjustment ranges and greater accuracy.
How is the adjustment made?
Most mechanical pressure switches have two adjustment springs: the large spring raises or lowers both the cut-in and cut-out pressures together, while the small spring adjusts the differential between the two pressures. Adjustment should be made in small increments with the power off and the cover open; after each adjustment, run the pump and check the result on the pressure gauge. If the pre-charge pressure of the expansion vessel is set slightly below the cut-in pressure, the system will operate in a balanced manner. Make sure the maximum pressure the pump can reach is higher than the switch's cut-out pressure.
Installation and safety
The pressure switch is typically mounted via a five-port fitting near the tank with a 1/4-inch connection. Electrical connections must be made with properly earthed cable of the appropriate cross-section, and the switch must be protected from moisture and water. On high-power three-phase motors, the switch should control the contactor rather than the motor directly. When burning or blackening is observed on the contacts, the switch should be replaced.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do if the pump runs continuously?
The cut-out pressure may be set higher than the pressure the pump can reach; lower the setting and check whether there is a leak in the system.
Why does the pump cycle on and off too frequently?
A drop in tank pre-charge pressure, a diaphragm failure, or too small a differential between the two pressure settings can cause this.
What does a non-venting pressure switch mean?
It is a model without an unloading outlet that releases line pressure when pressure drops; it is common in booster pump applications.
What is the advantage of a digital switch?
It displays pressure numerically, allows more precise adjustment, and some models include protections such as dry-run detection.
Can I use a pressure controller instead of a pressure switch?
Yes; a pressure controller is an alternative that also responds to flow and reduces the need for a tank.
