What is a pressure controller?
A pressure controller (electronic pressure and flow control device) is a small automation unit that converts a pump into a booster pump. When a faucet is opened and the pressure in the system drops below the set value, it starts the pump; it keeps the pump running as long as water is flowing, and stops the pump when flow ends. It performs the function of a pressure switch and large tank in a single compact device.
Protections provided by the pressure controller
- Dry-run protection: Stops the pump when the tank or well runs out of water, protecting the motor and mechanical seal.
- Automatic restart: Some models periodically restart the pump to check whether water has returned.
- Short-cycling protection: Can detect the pump cycling on and off too frequently due to a leak.
- Digital indicators: On digital models, the pressure value and fault status can be monitored on a display.
Selection and installation tips
The current and power capacity of the pressure controller must meet the values of your pump. The maximum pressure the pump can produce must be clearly higher than the cut-in pressure of the pressure controller; otherwise the pump may not stop. The device is connected to the pump outlet in accordance with the flow arrow on the casing, and in most models vertical mounting is recommended. If there are minor leaks in the system, adding a small expansion vessel of a few liters prevents the pump from cycling frequently. DC pressure controllers at 12/24 V are also available separately for DC pumps used in caravans and boats.
Frequently asked questions
What is a pressure controller board?
It is the electronic circuit board inside the pressure controller. When the board fails, a repair can be carried out with a compatible replacement board instead of replacing the entire unit; check the product description for model compatibility.
Which pumps is a pressure controller used with?
It is commonly used with domestic centrifugal, jet, and peripheral pumps. When used with submersible pumps, the pump's power and pressure must remain within the device's limits.
What happens if the pressure controller fails?
The pump may not start at all, or it may run non-stop. In this case, switch off the pump and have the connections and board inspected.
Can the pressure be adjusted?
On many models, the cut-in pressure can be adjusted within a certain range. The adjustment range is stated on the product page.
Can the pressure controller be installed outdoors?
As it is an electronic device, it must be mounted in a location protected from rain, frost, and direct sunlight. In humid environments, make sure the cover of the junction box is firmly closed.
