What Is a Radial Fan?

Fans that generate a pressure difference are called radial fans. The resulting air effect acts in the direction of centrifugal force. A centrifugal fan is a mechanical device used to move air or other gases. Like a pump, these fans have a rotating impeller and a spiral-shaped housing in which the impeller sits. Air or gas enters axially through the center, is pressurized and discharged tangentially from the impeller periphery into ducts, and is expelled through the outlet. Due to the high pressure they generate, centrifugal fans are ideal for high-pressure applications such as drying and air conditioning systems. Since all moving parts are enclosed, they also have particle-reducing properties that make them ideal for use in air pollution control and filtration systems.

Radial Fan Applications

  • Where the pressure and flow rates of axial fans are insufficient,
  • In duct applications,
  • In solid-fuel central heating boilers,
  • Hot air extraction in general and industrial buildings where ambient temperatures are high,
  • Warehouses, stockrooms, and storage facilities,
  • Garages and public buildings, agricultural buildings,
  • Commercial greenhouses,
  • Large workshops,
  • Paint shops,
  • Factories,
  • Environments containing dust and vapor,
  • For cooling industrial machinery (welding machines, transformers, compressors, etc.)

Radial Fan Casings and Impellers

  • Cold-drawn, high-quality DKP sheet steel radial casing,
  • High corrosion resistance with environmentally friendly electrostatic epoxy powder coating,
  • Galvanized forward-curved radial impeller dynamically balanced to ISO 1940 standard, manufactured in accordance with EN 60335-2-80
  • High pressure and flow rate values achieved through inlet nozzle design,
  • Air inlet protected by a guard against foreign object ingress
  • Sturdy and neat casing structure with special clinch-type casing assembly,

  • 400 V / 50 Hz, three-phase fan motor
  • Standards-compliant certified components,
  • IP 54 Protection Class (IP 55 production available on request)
  • Three-phase fans can be used with variable frequency drive (VFD) control.

Things to Consider When Selecting a Fan;

Four parameters must be considered when selecting a fan:
  • Required Air Flow Rate
  • Pressure Losses
  • Acceptable Noise Level
  • Electrical Power Connection Type
The air changes required for a ventilated space depend on the intended use of the space and the number and activities of the people and objects within it. The table alongside shows the required air change coefficients for various environments.
Environment Air Change Coefficient
Auditoriums 6-8
Paint Ovens 25-50
Vault Rooms 3-6
Cinemas and Theaters 5-8
Commercial Kitchens 15-30
Foundries 8-15
Gymnasiums 4-6
Laundries 10-20
Indoor Swimming Pools 3-4
Restaurants 8-12
Conference Rooms 6-8
Waiting Rooms 10-15
Copy Rooms 10-15
Machine Rooms 10-40
Shops 4-8
Dry Cleaning 5-15
General Manufacturing Areas 4-8
Hospitals 8-12
Laboratories 8-15
Normal Activity (non-smoking) 29 m³/h
Normal Activity (smoking) 58 m³/h
Light Activity 45 m³/h
Heavy Activity (industrial workspaces) 60 m³/h

Per-person air volumes in living and working spaces based on activity level can help determine the required airflow rate.

Based on the information provided above, the required air flow rate is determined as follows.

  • Q [m³/h] = Air change rate (1 hour) * Room volume (m³)
  • Or
  • Q [m³/h] = Number of persons × Air flow rate required per person
Once the required air flow rate for the space has been determined, an appropriate duct design (considering noise and air velocity criteria) must be prepared and pressure losses must be calculated. Depending on the environment in which the fan will operate, the fan type (axial, centrifugal, roof, smoke exhaust, etc.) should be decided upon, and the appropriate fan should be selected from the fan curve based on the established flow rate–static pressure pair. To briefly illustrate the above with an example using the table: an office has 5 employees, a ceiling height of 2.6 meters, and a floor area of 50 m², giving a volume of 2.6 × 50 = 130 m³. The air change coefficient from the table for an office was 4–8; let's take an average of 5. This gives 130 × 5 = 650 m³/h of air requirement. Assuming normal activity in the office, 5 persons × 29 m³ = 145 m³ for the occupants, for a total air requirement of 650 + 145 = 795 m³/h.

Fan selection is made according to this flow rate requirement.

After performing the flow rate calculations, the location where the fan will be installed must be determined. Where will the fan be mounted — on the ceiling, wall, chimney, or ventilation duct, etc.? Another consideration is the voltage of the electricity supply to the fan. Since we used an office as our example, let us continue with that. Fans are generally wall- or glass-mounted in offices. If standard household electricity is to be used, a single-phase fan should be preferred. If the fan is to be used in an industrial setting, a fan operating on three-phase (380 V) electricity should be used.
