What Is a Radial Fan?

Fans that generate a pressure difference are called radial fans. The resulting air effect acts in the direction of centrifugal force. A centrifugal fan is a mechanical device used to move air or other gases. Like a pump, these fans have a rotating impeller and a spiral-shaped housing in which the impeller sits. Air or gas enters axially through the center, is pressurized and discharged tangentially from the impeller periphery into ducts, and is expelled through the outlet. Due to the high pressure they generate, centrifugal fans are ideal for high-pressure applications such as drying and air conditioning systems. Since all moving parts are enclosed, they also have particle-reducing properties that make them ideal for use in air pollution control and filtration systems.

Radial Fan Applications

  • Where the pressure and flow rates of axial fans are insufficient,
  • In duct applications,
  • In solid-fuel central heating boilers,
  • Hot air extraction in high-temperature environments, general and industrial buildings,
  • Warehouses, stockrooms, and storage facilities,
  • Garages and publicly accessible buildings, agricultural buildings,
  • Commercial greenhouses,
  • Large workshops,
  • Paint shops,
  • Factories,
  • Environments with dust and vapor,
  • Cooling of industrial machinery
  • (Welding machines, transformers, compressors…)

Radial Fan Casings and Impellers

  • Variable frequency drive (VFD) control can be used with three-phase fans ***

Things to Consider When Selecting a Fan;

4 parameters should be considered when selecting a fan:
  • Required Air Flow Rate
  • Pressure Losses
  • Acceptable Noise Level
  • Electrical Power Connection Type
The air changes required for the space to be ventilated depend on the intended use of the space, the number of occupants and objects inside, and their activities. The table alongside provides the required air change rate coefficients for different environments.
Environment Air Change Rate
Auditoriums 6-8
Paint Ovens 25-50
Vault Rooms 3-6
Cinemas and Theaters 5-8
Commercial Kitchens 15-30
Foundries 8-15
Gymnasiums 4-6
Laundries 10-20
Indoor Swimming Pools 3-4
Restaurants 8-12
Conference Rooms 6-8
Waiting Rooms 10-15
Copy Rooms 10-15
Machine Rooms 10-40
Shops 4-8
Dry Cleaning 5-15
General Manufacturing Areas 4-8
Hospitals 8-12
Laboratories 8-15
Normal Activity (non-smoking) 29 m³/h
Normal Activity (smoking) 58 m³/h
Light Activity 45 m³/h
Heavy Activity (industrial work areas) 60 m³/h

The amount of air per person in living and working spaces depending on activity level can help determine the required air flow rate.

Based on the information provided above, the required air flow rate is determined as follows.

  • Q [ m³/h ] = Air change rate coefficient (1 hour) × Space volume (m³)
  • Or
  • Q [ m³/h ] = Number of people × Air flow rate required per person
After determining the required air flow rate for the space, an appropriate duct design (taking noise and air velocity criteria into account) should be made and pressure losses calculated. The fan type (axial, radial, roof, smoke extraction, etc.) should be decided based on the operating environment, and the appropriate fan should be selected from the relevant fan curve according to the determined flow rate–static pressure pair. To briefly illustrate the above with an example: an office has 5 employees, a ceiling height of 2.6 meters, and a floor area of 50 m², giving a volume of 2.6 × 50 = 130 m³. The air change rate coefficient given for an office in the table is 4–8; let's take 5. 130 × 5 = 650 m³/h air requirement. If we assume normal activity in the office, 5 people × 29 m³ = 145 m³ for employees, giving a total of 650 + 145 = 795 m³/h air requirement.

Fan selection is also made based on this flow rate requirement.

After completing the flow rate calculations, the installation location of the fan should be determined. Where will the fan be mounted — ceiling, wall, chimney, or ventilation duct? Another consideration is the voltage of the electrical supply to the fan. Continuing with our office example: fans in offices are generally mounted on a wall or glass. If a domestic electricity supply is used, a single-phase fan should be preferred. If it is to be used in an industrial setting, a fan operating on three-phase (380 V) power should be used.
