What is a centrifugal (radial) fan?
Centrifugal fans draw air in through the center of the impeller, throw it outward, and pressurize it inside the spiral-shaped casing before delivering it through the outlet. This design allows them to generate far higher pressure than axial fans. They are the fan type of choice in systems with resistance to airflow, such as long and elbowed ducts, filters, dust collection systems, hoods, boilers, and ovens.
Types by pressure class
- Low-pressure fans: High flow rate, low resistance; general ventilation and hood applications.
- Medium-pressure fans: Balanced solution for ducted exhaust and dust extraction.
- High-pressure fans: For burners, stoves, pneumatic conveying, and long duct runs.
- Special applications: Dust and chip extraction, high-temperature, and double-inlet fans.
The mmH₂O (millimeters water column) value in product names indicates the pressure the fan can generate, while the m³/h value indicates its flow rate.
Blade type and selection
Close-bladed fans deliver high flow at low pressure and operate quietly; they are common in clean-air applications. Wide-spaced (flat) blade fans can handle air carrying dust, chips, and particles without clogging. For selection, the flow rate and total pressure loss required by the system must be determined, and the fan's performance values must meet this operating point. The direction of the outlet and the rotation direction of the fan should be chosen to suit the duct layout. Single-phase and three-phase motor options are evaluated according to the facility's electrical infrastructure.
Installation and maintenance
The fan must be mounted on a solid base with anti-vibration mounts and connected to the ducts with flexible couplings. There must be no obstruction in front of the inlet. Dust and grease accumulation on the blades causes imbalance, leading to vibration and bearing wear; regular cleaning is required.
Frequently asked questions
What does mmH₂O mean?
Millimeters water column is a measure of the pressure a fan can generate. The higher the value, the longer and more resistant the duct runs in which the fan can operate.
Why use a centrifugal fan instead of an axial fan?
In ducted and high-resistance systems, axial fans cannot generate sufficient pressure. Centrifugal fans overcome this resistance while maintaining flow rate.
How is the fan's rotation direction determined?
The arrow on the casing indicates the rotation direction. On three-phase motors, the direction can be corrected by swapping the phase sequence.
Which fan is suitable for dust extraction?
Fans with wide-spaced blades suited for dust and chips should be preferred.
Why is the fan vibrating?
Dirt buildup on the blades, loose mounting, or bearing wear causes vibration. Start with cleaning and checking the installation.
