What is a low-pressure centrifugal fan?

Low-pressure centrifugal fans are radial fans designed to move large volumes of air in low-resistance systems. They are used in ventilation systems with short duct runs, kitchen range hoods, general exhaust applications, and tasks where air movement matters but high pressure is not required. Values such as 40–45 mmSS in product names indicate the pressure class of these fans.

When should they be preferred?

For applications with high resistance such as long ducts, filters, or dust conveying, medium- or high-pressure fans should be selected.

Selection criteria

The fan's flow rate must meet the ventilation requirement of the space; the m³/h value in product names serves as a guide. The total pressure loss of the system must remain below the fan's pressure rating; otherwise the actual flow rate will fall well short of expectations. Motor power (HP) and electrical supply must be compatible with your installation. Wide-blade models reduce the risk of clogging in applications where the air contains small amounts of particulate matter.

Installation and maintenance

The fan should be secured to a solid surface using anti-vibration mounts, and duct connections should be made with flexible sections. In range hood applications, blades and the casing must be cleaned frequently as oil buildup accumulates quickly. Bearing noise and vibration indicate that maintenance is due.

Frequently asked questions

Is a low-pressure fan suitable for a range hood?

It is suitable for range hood systems with short ducts. Higher-pressure fans may be required for long duct runs.

What is the relationship between flow rate and pressure?

As system resistance increases, the flow rate the fan can deliver decreases. Correct selection requires both values to be evaluated together.

What advantage do wide-spaced blades offer?

They reduce the risk of blade clogging in air containing particulate matter.

Is the fan noisy?

Low-pressure fans are generally quieter than medium- and high-pressure models.

Can the outlet of a low-pressure fan be rotated to face a different direction?

On models whose housing design permits it, the outlet position can be changed. This information is stated in the product description.

Can a low-pressure fan be used without ducts?

Low-pressure fans operate most efficiently in ductless or very short-duct applications.
