What Is a Radial Fan?

Fans that generate a pressure difference are called radial fans. The resulting air effect acts in the direction of centrifugal force. A centrifugal fan is a mechanical device used to move air or other gases. Like a pump, these fans have a rotating impeller and a spiral housing in which the impeller sits. Air or gas enters centrally along the axis and is pressurized and discharged tangentially to the impeller periphery into ducts, then expelled through the discharge outlet. Due to the high pressures they generate, centrifugal fans are ideal for high-pressure applications such as drying and air-conditioning systems. Since all moving parts are enclosed and they also have particle-reduction characteristics, they are ideal for use in air pollution control and filtration systems.

Aircol Aks 12-60 Application Areas

    • Suitable for use in all industrial heating or cooling applications where airflow is required.
    • Especially in solid-fuel boilers,
    • In lathe machines,
    • In plastic packaging machines,
    • In hand dryers,
    • Used in cooling applications such as elevator motors and electrical panels.

AKS 12-60 Specifications

  • Products with a housing made of high-quality aluminum are resistant to corrosion, heat, and similarly harsh operating conditions.
  • The forward-curved galvanized steel fan (Ø 120 mm) with thin blades delivers optimum performance thanks to its light weight, high flow rate, and low noise level.
  • Thanks to the externally rotored single-phase fan motor, low energy consumption and high efficiency are achieved.
  • Bearing motor bearings provide quiet, maintenance-free, and long-lasting performance.

Aircol AKS-120-60 Usage Options

  • Can be used as standard with an on/off button.
  • Can be used at the desired speed and rpm together with speed controllers.
  • It has thermal overload protection since the motor may wear in hot environments.

Things to Consider When Selecting a Fan;

4 parameters should be considered when selecting a fan:
  • Required Air Flow Rate
  • Pressure Losses
  • Acceptable Noise Level
  • Electrical Power Connection Type
The air changes required for the space to be ventilated depend on the intended use of the space, the number of occupants and objects inside, and their activities. The table alongside provides the required air change rate coefficients for different environments.
Environment Air Change Coefficient
Classrooms 5-7
Libraries 4-5
Domestic kitchens 15-25
Bathrooms 5-7
Domestic restrooms 4-5
Public restrooms 8-15
Conference rooms 6-8
Offices 4-8
Changing rooms 6-8

Normal Activity (Non-Smoking) 29 m³/h
Normal Activity (Smoking) 58 m³/h
Light Activity 45 m³/h
Heavy Activity 60 m³/h
The amount of air per person in living and working spaces depending on activity level can help determine the required air flow rate.

Based on the information provided above, the required air flow rate is determined as follows.

    • Q [ m³/h ] = Air change rate coefficient (1 hour) × Space volume (m³)
    • Or
    • Q [ m³/h ] = Number of people × Air flow rate required per person
After determining the required air flow rate for the space, an appropriate duct design (taking noise and air velocity criteria into account) should be made and pressure losses calculated. The fan type (axial, radial, roof, smoke extraction, etc.) should be decided based on the operating environment, and the appropriate fan should be selected from the relevant fan curve according to the determined flow rate–static pressure pair. To briefly illustrate the above with an example: an office has 5 employees, a ceiling height of 2.6 meters, and a floor area of 50 m², giving a volume of 2.6 × 50 = 130 m³. The air change rate coefficient given for an office in the table is 4–8; let's take 5. 130 × 5 = 650 m³/h air requirement. If we assume normal activity in the office, 5 people × 29 m³ = 145 m³ for employees, giving a total of 650 + 145 = 795 m³/h air requirement.

Fan selection is also made based on this flow rate requirement.

After completing the flow rate calculations, the installation location of the fan should be determined. Where will the fan be mounted — ceiling, wall, chimney, or ventilation duct? Another consideration is the voltage of the electrical supply to the fan. Continuing with our office example: fans in offices are generally mounted on a wall or glass. If a domestic electricity supply is used, a single-phase fan should be preferred. If it is to be used in an industrial setting, a fan operating on three-phase (380 V) power should be used.
