What is a chemical pump?

Chemical pumps are pumps manufactured from suitable materials to transfer corrosive, aggressive, or hygiene-critical liquids that standard water pumps cannot withstand. Acid and base solutions, salt water, seawater, solvents, galvanizing and plating baths, detergents, and food and beverage liquids are among the main fluids these pumps handle. The correct choice of material directly determines both the pump's service life and operational safety.

Types by material

If precise feeding in small quantities is required, dosing pumps are a more accurate choice.

Choosing the right pump

The first step in selection is knowing the fluid's name, concentration, and temperature. The mechanical seal and gasket materials must be compatible with the fluid, just as the casing and impeller materials must be. As a general guide, NBR is preferred for oils, EPDM for hot water and some alkaline solutions, and FKM (Viton) for many acids and solvents; however, the manufacturer's compatibility information should always be checked for each chemical. If the fluid's density and viscosity are higher than water, the motor power must be increased accordingly.

Safety and installation

Chemical pumps should be installed on a drip tray or containment basin in case of leaks, and adequate ventilation must be provided in the surrounding area. Before maintenance, the pump and line must be drained and flushed with clean water, and the person performing the work must wear protective gloves and goggles. Running the pump dry can cause the seal to overheat and leak.

Frequently asked questions

Does a stainless steel pump resist every chemical?

No. Stainless steel is resistant to many liquids, but some acids and chloride-containing solutions can also corrode stainless steel; in such cases, plastic-casing pumps are preferred.

What is the difference between AISI 304 and AISI 316?

AISI 316 contains molybdenum and is more resistant than AISI 304 to chloride-containing water, salt water, and many chemicals.

Can a chemical pump handle hot liquids?

The maximum allowable liquid temperature varies by model; this limit should be observed particularly for plastic-casing pumps.

Which pump is suitable for viscous liquids?

Centrifugal pumps lose efficiency with thick and sticky liquids; gear or diaphragm pumps are more suitable for such fluids.

What information should I provide for selection?

You can share the fluid's name and concentration, temperature, required flow rate, and head via chat to receive a suitable model recommendation.
