Advantages of plastic-casing pumps

Plastic-casing pumps are developed for acids, salt water, seawater, and corrosive solutions that quickly corrode metal pumps. Because the casing and impeller are manufactured from engineering plastics such as polypropylene, no rusting occurs and the surfaces in contact with the liquid are resistant to chemical attack. They are also lighter than metal pumps, which makes them convenient for portable applications.

Applications

A plastic casing also prevents metal ions from contaminating the liquid, which makes it additionally preferable in certain processes.

Selection considerations

The maximum permitted liquid temperature for plastic pumps is generally lower than for metal pumps; always check this limit if hot liquids are to be pumped. The mechanical seal and gasket materials must be compatible with the fluid, which is just as important as the casing material. If the liquid's density exceeds that of water (as is the case with some acid and salt solutions), the motor will be under greater load; size the power accordingly. If the pump will be exposed to direct sunlight, installing it in a sheltered location will extend the service life of the plastic casing and seals.

Safety

Personal protective equipment must be worn when working with acids and corrosive liquids, and the pump should be installed over a drip tray to contain any spills. Before maintenance, the line should be drained and flushed with clean water.

Frequently asked questions

Can a plastic pump be used with seawater?

Yes; salt water and seawater are among the typical applications for these pumps.

Can a plastic pump handle oils or solvents?

Some solvents can damage plastic materials; check the compatibility of the fluid with the casing and gasket materials in the product information.

How durable is a plastic pump?

It has a long service life when used with a compatible liquid at the correct temperature; impact and excessive heat can damage the plastic casing.

Is there a leak-free alternative?

For applications where zero leakage is required, seal-less magnetic drive pumps can be preferred.

What power rating should I choose?

In addition to flow rate and head, take the liquid's density into account when comparing product specifications.

Can a plastic pump be used outdoors?

Yes; however, installing it in a location protected from direct sunlight and freezing temperatures extends the service life of the casing and seals.
