What does a dosing pump do?

Dosing pumps are used to add a chemical to a line or tank in precise and repeatable quantities. The main applications include chlorine and pH adjustment in water treatment systems, disinfection in pools, scale and corrosion inhibitor dosing in cooling towers, detergent feeding in dishwashers and washing machines, and fertilizer dosing in agriculture. Accurate dosing both saves chemicals and contributes to safe process operation.

Dosing pump types

Expressions such as "5 L/10 B" in product names indicate the pump's maximum flow rate (liters per hour) and maximum back pressure (bar).

Selection considerations

The pump's flow rate should be slightly above the maximum required dose, and its back pressure should exceed the pressure of the injection line. The pump head and gaskets must be made of a material compatible with the chemical being dosed. If automatic dosing controlled by a water meter, flow switch, or a pH/chlorine metering device is required, the relevant input specifications should be checked; for metering and control, see the metering and control devices category.

Installation and safety

A foot strainer and level sensor should be used on the suction side, and an injection valve on the discharge side. Dosing will not be accurate unless the pump is primed. Chemical tanks and the pump should be positioned inside a containment basin to guard against leaks.

Frequently asked questions

Which dosing pump is suitable for a pool?

Separate pumps are used for chlorine and pH, or automatic systems connected to a metering device; flow rate is selected according to pool volume.

What is the advantage of a peristaltic pump?

The chemical contacts only the hose; maintenance is carried out easily by replacing the hose.

Why is the dosing pump not pumping chemical?

Air trapped in the head, a blocked injection valve, or an empty tank are the most common causes.

Is there a suitable model for a dishwasher?

Yes; dual-head peristaltic models for dishwashers are available in the category.

How is the flow rate adjusted?

Depending on the model, the flow rate is changed by adjusting the stroke rate, stroke length, or motor speed.
