When is an all-stainless pump required?

In all-stainless pumps, the casing, impeller, and other parts in contact with the liquid are made of stainless steel. This construction prevents rust formation, keeps the liquid clean, and provides resistance to many chemicals. Food and beverage production, dairy and winery operations, cosmetic and pharmaceutical facilities, water purification systems, washing lines, and light chemical transfer are the main application areas for these pumps.

Model types

The designation AISI 304 or AISI 316 in product names indicates the grade of stainless steel used.

Selection recommendations

If the fluid contains chlorides (salt water, some cleaning chemicals), AISI 316 grade should be preferred. In food applications, the gasket and seal materials in contact with the liquid should also be verified as food-grade. Flow rate and head are determined by the line length and elevation difference; motor power must be increased for dense or viscous liquids. For models that are not self-priming, the pump must be installed below the liquid level or the suction line must be primed.

Cleaning and maintenance

In food and beverage applications, flushing the pump with clean water or an appropriate cleaning solution after each production run preserves both hygiene and seal life. Running the pump dry damages the mechanical seal. If a leak, unusual noise, or vibration is noticed, the pump should be stopped and inspected.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stainless steel pump be used for olive oil or wine transfer?

Stainless steel pumps with gasket materials compatible with the liquid can be used. Bidirectional pumps are also preferred for gentle handling of sensitive products.

Is AISI 316 always necessary?

No; AISI 304 is sufficient for clean water and many food applications. AISI 316 is recommended for saline and chloride-containing liquids.

Can the pump handle hot liquids?

The maximum allowable temperature varies by model and seal type; check the product specifications.

Should I choose an open or closed impeller?

An open impeller is preferred when the liquid contains small particles; a closed impeller is preferred when high efficiency in clean liquid is required.

Can a stainless steel pump replace a chemical pump?

It can for many light chemicals; for strong acids, consider plastic-casing pumps.
