What is a reversible pump?

Reversible pumps are self-priming pumps in which the inlet and outlet ports swap positions by reversing the motor's direction of rotation. This feature makes it possible to fill a tank using the same hose connections and then empty it by reversing the direction. They greatly simplify liquid transfer operations in olive oil mills, wineries, vinegar and fruit juice producers, dairy operations, and oil storage facilities.

Construction and features

Some models are supplied with a wheeled trolley and a dispensing nozzle for portable use, enabling easy operation between different tanks within a facility.

Selection recommendations

The pump's flow rate should be selected according to the volume of liquid to be transferred and the time available for the task. As liquid viscosity increases, flow rate decreases; for thick liquids, consider the next model up. For food products, verify that the vane, gasket, and hose materials in contact with the liquid are food-grade. Power supply options include 220 V single-phase as well as 12 V and 24 V DC.

Use and maintenance

Flexible vane pumps are sensitive to dry running; stop the pump immediately when the liquid runs out. Flushing the pump with clean water after each use ensures hygiene and extends the vane's service life. Removing and storing the vane when the pump will not be used for an extended period prevents the rubber from deforming.

Frequently asked questions

Is a reversible pump suitable for wine?

Models manufactured with food-grade materials are used for transferring wine, vinegar, and fruit juice; check the product details.

What happens if it runs dry?

The rubber vane can overheat from friction and be damaged; turn off the pump when the liquid runs out.

Can it be used for oil transfer?

Yes; vane and paddle models designed for oil transfer are available in this category.

Why has the flow rate dropped?

A worn vane, clogged strainer, or air leak in the suction line reduces the flow rate.

Where are similar pumps?

Other options for food and chemical applications are in the stainless steel pumps category.

What hose should be used in food applications?

Transparent or spiral hoses specified as food-grade should be used.
