What is an axial fan?
In axial fans, the blades move air along the direction of the motor shaft — that is, from the front face of the fan to the rear face. This design allows large volumes of air to be moved with little energy in low-resistance environments. Typical applications include wall and window exhaust fans, flue fans, electrical panel and machine cooling fans, condenser fans and greenhouse ventilation fans.
Types of axial fan
- AC axial fans: Operating on 220 V, for wall, flue and equipment cooling applications.
- Louvered axial fans: Fitted with shutters that close when the fan stops, preventing outside air and dust from entering.
- Cooling fans: Operating as extractors or blowers, for condenser and machine cooling.
- Industrial axial exhaust fans: High-flow, metal-cased models for workshops and warehouses.
Selection criteria
When selecting an axial fan, first determine the required flow rate; the m³/h value in product names indicates the fan's free-air capacity. The diameter of the wall or window opening where the fan will be mounted must match the fan diameter. In systems connected to long ducts, axial fans may not generate sufficient pressure; in such cases, duct-type or radial fans should be preferred. As speed (RPM) increases, both flow rate and noise increase; low-speed models are more comfortable in living spaces.
Installation and maintenance
The direction of airflow is indicated by an arrow on the fan casing; extract or supply use is determined accordingly. The fan should be fixed to a solid surface to reduce vibration, and a protective guard should be fitted around the blades. Regular cleaning of the blades and guards maintains the fan's efficiency and quietness. For fans opening to the outside, protection against rain and wind should be considered.
Frequently asked questions
Can an axial fan be used in a long duct?
It can be used in short, straight ducts. For long ducts with high resistance, radial or duct fans are more suitable for achieving the required flow rate.
What is the difference between an extract fan and a supply fan?
The difference is the direction in which air is moved. Some models operate in one direction only; others can be used either way depending on the mounting orientation.
How can I reduce fan noise?
Choosing a larger-diameter, lower-speed model or reducing the speed with a speed controller will lower noise. Anti-vibration mounts also help.
Which fan is suitable for panel cooling?
Compact AC axial fans sized to fit the panel are used. A filtered grille prevents dust from entering the panel.
What is the advantage of a louvered fan?
When the fan is not running, the shutters close and prevent cold air, dust and insects from entering from outside.
What does "equivalent fan" mean?
These are alternative models manufactured to match widely used industrial fan dimensions. Compare the dimensions, mounting and electrical specifications with your existing fan.
