What does a cooling fan do?
Cooling fans help keep temperature under control by providing airflow over devices that generate or transfer heat. Condenser and evaporator coils in refrigeration systems, compressors, electric motors, transformers, electrical panels, and industrial machinery are the main areas of use for these fans. A correctly selected cooling fan directly affects the efficiency and service life of the device.
Suction or blowing?
- Suction fans: Draw air through the coil or device and expel it to the outside.
- Blowing fans: Push air toward the device.
Whether a fan operates as suction or blowing is determined by the blade and motor arrangement. When replacing an existing fan, the airflow direction must be the same; a fan oriented in the wrong direction negatively affects cooling.
Selection criteria
Fan diameter, number of blades, speed (RPM), and flow rate (m³/h) must be selected according to the cooling requirement of the device. The mounting grille or flange dimensions must match the existing housing. Single-phase (220 V) models are used in many commercial refrigeration devices; fans with appropriate motors should be selected for three-phase equipment. For fans operating outdoors, the motor's protection rating against moisture and dust should be taken into account.
Maintenance
Dust on condenser and coil surfaces causes the fan to work harder and reduces cooling capacity; coils should be cleaned regularly. An increase in fan noise may be a sign of bearing wear. Cracks or bends in the blades cause vibration; a fan with damaged blades must not be used.
Frequently asked questions
How do you replace a cooling fan?
First cut the power, then remove the fan's connecting cables and mounting screws. Mount the new fan in the same orientation and make the connections.
How can you tell the rotation direction of a fan?
Arrows on the housing indicate the rotation and airflow direction. If there are no arrows, check the product information.
Can a cooling fan run continuously?
These fans are designed for long-duration operation. Nevertheless, adequate ventilation and clean coils prevent the motor from overheating.
Why does fan speed matter?
As speed increases, flow rate and noise increase. Selecting a model close to the speed recommended by the device manufacturer provides balanced cooling.
Which fan is suitable for a panel?
Compact AC axial fans are widely used in panel applications.
The condenser fan is running noisily — what should I do?
First clean the blades and the coil. If the noise continues, the bearing or motor needs to be checked.
