What is a shuttered axial fan?
Shuttered axial fans are wall-mounted exhaust fans fitted with louver covers at the front or rear that open while the fan is running and close when it stops. When the fan is not operating, they prevent cold air, dust, insects, and rain from entering from outside. This feature reduces heat loss and contamination, especially at ventilation openings cut through exterior walls.
Applications
- Odor and steam extraction in residential and commercial kitchens
- Moisture removal in bathrooms, toilets, and laundry rooms
- Ventilation in storerooms, pantries, and garages
- Air exchange in small workshops and offices
- Smoking areas and enclosed waiting rooms
Shutter types and selection
The covers may be gravity-type, opening by the push of airflow, or mechanism-type, operating in sync with the motor. When selecting a fan, the required flow rate, the diameter of the wall opening, and the fan's noise level should all be evaluated together. Dimensions such as 20 cm in product names indicate the fan's size class, while m³/h values indicate the flow rate. On wind-exposed facades, shuttered models also prevent wind from entering when the fan is off.
Installation and maintenance
The fan must be fitted so it sits flush in the hole cut in the wall, and any gaps around the edges must be sealed with suitable material. There must be no obstruction in front of the shutter to allow it to open and close freely. In kitchen applications, grease that accumulates on the blades and shutter should be cleaned regularly; a greasy shutter will not close fully.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't the shutter close fully?
Grease and dust buildup or bent shutter blades cause this. Cleaning usually resolves the problem.
Can a shuttered fan be fitted to a window?
Models designed for glass and window installation should be used. For thick-wall mounting, wall-type models are appropriate.
Can it be used instead of a range hood in the kitchen?
It provides general ventilation but does not capture steam directly above the stove. A range hood is more effective where intensive cooking takes place.
Which diameter should I choose?
Select based on the diameter of the wall opening and the required flow rate. If an existing hole is present, start by measuring it.
Does a shuttered fan make noise?
The fan noise during operation and the slight sound of the shutter opening are normal.
Are more powerful models available?
For high flow rates, you can take a look at industrial exhaust fans.
How often should the covers of a shuttered fan be cleaned?
It depends on the intensity of use. In greasy environments such as kitchens, cleaning every few months is recommended; in other areas, a few times a year depending on dust buildup.
