What Is a Centrifugal (Snail) Fan?

These are fans in which air leaves the fan wheel at a 90° angle relative to the inlet, departing tangentially along the blades.

The advantages of centrifugal fans are as follows:

  • Wide application range
  • High-temperature, corrosive, and abrasive environment applications
  • Easier access to the motor compared to direct-drive axial fans
  • More efficient and quieter operation, especially in locations with variable flow resistance
  • High structural stability
  • Very high pressures and flow rates
In centrifugal-type fans, the air movement generated by the pressure difference is not axial but in the direction of centrifugal force. The flow rate and pressure ranges they provide are the determining factors in their classification.

What Is a Low-Pressure Centrifugal Fan? Where Is It Used?

Low-pressure fans are used for circulating existing air. MTTA low-pressure centrifugal fans have an air flow rate range of 2,000 m³/h to 42,000 m³/h.

  • For exhausting small particles, fine dust, or chips,
  • For ventilating paint shops and areas where chemicals are used,
  • Used in industrial kitchens. Thanks to the square casing system, the casing can easily be rotated to the desired discharge position. It is one of the most economical ventilation solutions.

    • Things to Consider When Selecting a Low-Pressure Radial Fan

MTTA low-pressure centrifugal fans have an air flow rate range of 2,000 m³/h to 42,000 m³/h.
To select a fan for a specific air distribution system:
      • The system must be fully designed, with all components and dimensions determined.
      • Air volume (flow rate) values must be established.
      • Static pressure should be determined by summing the pressure losses across components such as ducts, grilles, louvers, dampers, air washers, filters, heating and cooling coils.

      Things to Consider When Selecting a Fan;

4 parameters should be considered when selecting a fan:
      • Required Air Flow Rate
      • Pressure Losses
      • Acceptable Noise Level
      • Electrical Power Connection Type
The air changes required for the space to be ventilated depend on the intended use of the space, the number of occupants and objects inside, and their activities. The table alongside provides the required air change rate coefficients for different environments.

      Hospitals 8-12
      Laboratories 8-15
      Normal Activity (non-smoking) 29 m³/h
      Normal Activity (smoking) 58 m³/h
      Light Activity 45 m³/h
Heavy Activity (industrial work areas) 60 m³/h
The amount of air per person in living and working spaces depending on activity level can help determine the required air flow rate.

Based on the information provided above, the required air flow rate is determined as follows.

      • Q [ m³/h ] = Air change rate coefficient (1 hour) × Space volume (m³)
      • Or
      • Q [ m³/h ] = Number of people × Air flow rate required per person
      • After determining the required air flow rate for the space, an appropriate duct design (taking noise and air velocity criteria into account) should be made and pressure losses calculated. The fan type (axial, radial, roof, smoke extraction, etc.) should be decided based on the operating environment, and the appropriate fan should be selected from the relevant fan curve according to the determined flow rate–static pressure pair. To briefly illustrate the above with an example: an office has 5 employees, a ceiling height of 2.6 meters, and a floor area of 50 m², giving a volume of 2.6 × 50 = 130 m³. The air change rate coefficient given for an office in the table is 4–8; let's take 5. 130 × 5 = 650 m³/h air requirement. If we assume normal activity in the office, 5 people × 29 m³ = 145 m³ for employees, giving a total of 650 + 145 = 795 m³/h air requirement.

Fan selection is also made based on this flow rate requirement.

After completing the flow rate calculations, the installation location of the fan should be determined. Where will the fan be mounted — ceiling, wall, chimney, or ventilation duct? Another consideration is the voltage of the electrical supply to the fan. Continuing with our office example: fans in offices are generally mounted on a wall or glass. If a domestic electricity supply is used, a single-phase fan should be preferred. If it is to be used in an industrial setting, a fan operating on three-phase (380 V) power should be used.
