What Is a Booster Pump?

Booster pumps are automatic pumps used to pressurize water where mains pressure is insufficient. They can be used on their own or, in some plumbing systems, together with a water storage tank.

They pressurize mains water in homes, apartments, buildings, villas, and residential complexes, or deliver water from a storage tank to the plumbing system under pressure.

The advantage of this is that the pump does not stop and start on every water use, resulting in a longer service life. In other words, the larger the expansion vessel in your booster pump, the more water it stores, so the pump works less and lasts longer.

If the booster pump will draw water from a storage tank, it is advisable to use a level float switch in case the tank runs dry. If the tank runs dry, it will stop the unit from operating and prevent motor damage. When the tank refills, the booster pump will automatically resume operation.
