What Is a Ball Valve?

A ball valve is a quarter-turn valve that uses a bored, rotating ball to control the flow passing through it. The valve is open when the bore of the ball is aligned with the flow and closed when it is rotated 90 degrees by the valve handle.

The handle is straight when open, aligned with the flow, and in the perpendicular position when closed, allowing visual confirmation of the valve's status.
