What Is a Magnetic Pump?

Magnetic pumps are designed to pump toxic and other hazardous liquids without the use of mechanical seals. A magnetic pump is a type of pump driven by the science of magnetism rather than direct electrical connection from an external source. Magnetic pumps are energy-efficient and do not require a mechanical seal or oil seal to operate. Magnetic pumps circulate a variety of liquids, including acids, water, and oils. Because magnetic pumps have no mechanical seal, there is no risk of hazardous chemical leakage or pump overheating due to a blockage.

The general operating principle of magnetic pumps involves a rotating impeller housed in a closed casing driven by a magnetic field generated by magnets. The rotation of the impeller produces a force that feeds liquid into and out of the pump casing.The primary purpose of the pump is to maintain energy and motion within a liquid.

Magnetic pumps have magnets connected to the impeller and the motor. Permanent magnets are attached to the pump's drive assembly. The drive magnet, which drives the inner rotor, is connected to a secondary shaft driven by the motor. When the motor starts, it rotates its magnet. The magnetic force from the motor's magnet causes the magnet on the impeller to rotate, thereby turning the impeller.

Magnetic pumps are centrifugal pumps, meaning the liquid pumped through the system exits at a different point from where it enters the pump. The rotation of the impeller causes the liquid's energy to increase and the discharge pressure to rise. This increase in pressure is what drives the fluid to move.

Applications

• All types of chemicals (paints, oils, etc.), acids (hydrochloric, sulfuric, etc.), bases (especially sodium hydroxide), or any liquids with corrosive properties.
• Loading and unloading of tankers carrying hazardous materials.
• These pumps are also needed in applications where ultra-pure liquids are used, in order to maintain the purity of those liquids.
• Applications where liquids that can corrode standard gasket materials or crystallize on gasket surfaces are used.
