How does a magnetically driven pump work?
In magnetically driven pumps, the motor shaft is not directly connected to the pump impeller. The outer magnet on the end of the motor shaft drives the inner magnet located inside a sealed containment shell via a magnetic field; the inner magnet in turn rotates the impeller. Because the shaft does not pass through the casing, no mechanical seal is required. This effectively eliminates liquid leakage from the pump.
Where are they preferred?
- Transfer of acids, bases, and hazardous chemicals
- Plating, etching, and laboratory applications
- Seawater and aquarium systems
- Processes where loss of odorous or costly liquids is unacceptable
- Water purification and chemical dosing preparation tanks
The casing material and maximum liquid temperature must always be checked in the product information to select a model suited to the fluid.
Points to note
In magnetic drive pumps, the impeller bearings are lubricated and cooled by the liquid being pumped. The pump must therefore never be run dry; even brief dry running can damage the bearings. Liquids containing solid particles can cause abrasion inside the pump, so a strainer should be fitted on the suction side. If the liquid's density or viscosity exceeds the pump's design values, the magnetic coupling can decouple; in this case the impeller will not rotate and the pump will not deliver flow.
Installation
Magnetic drive pumps are generally not self-priming; they must be installed below the liquid level or the suction line must be primed. Securing the pump to a vibration-free base and preventing loads from the pipework are important for long service life.
Frequently asked questions
Is a magnetic drive pump completely leak-free?
Because there is no shaft seal, seal-related leakage does not occur; however, the leak-tightness of the pipe connections must be ensured separately.
Why does the magnetic coupling decouple?
Excessively dense or viscous liquid, a seized impeller, or an incorrect motor selection can cause decoupling.
Are single-phase models available?
Yes; the category includes 220 V single-phase and 380 V three-phase models.
Can hot chemicals be pumped?
The permitted temperature depends on the casing material; do not exceed the limit stated in the product description.
What are the alternatives?
For applications requiring higher flow rates and greater resistance, plastic or stainless steel chemical pumps can be considered.
Why does a magnetic drive pump run quietly?
Because there is no seal friction and the impeller rotates inside the liquid, mechanical noise is low, making it suitable for laboratories and enclosed spaces.
