What Is a Cooling Exhaust Fan?

Fans are equipment that, like pumps but unlike pumps, pressurize and transfer gas instead of liquid. Fans are among the most important equipment used not only for the air suction and discharge functions required by industrial processes, but also for ventilating residential buildings, workplaces, and especially communal living spaces.

Equipment used in industry generates a large amount of heat when operating at high levels. These systems may be at risk of overheating if appropriate cooling equipment is not used. Overheated equipment can create numerous risks such as poor performance, premature component and lubricant degradation, general system failure, and ultimately the possibility of fire and other safety hazards for users and operating personnel.

Industrial cooling fans are manufactured to eliminate these risks. While cooling the hot air in your facility, they help your equipment and personnel operate more efficiently.

Where Are Cooling Exhaust Fans Used?

  • Warehouses, stockrooms, and storage facilities,
  • Garages and public buildings, agricultural buildings,
  • Commercial greenhouses,
  • Large workshops,
  • Paint shops,
  • Factories,
  • Environments with dust and vapor,
  • For cooling industrial machinery (welding machines, transformers, compressors)

Fan Housing and Blade Sections of Cooling Fans

  • Casing and fan blades made of cold-drawn, high-quality DKP sheet steel,
  • High corrosion resistance with environmentally friendly electrostatic epoxy powder coating,
  • Fan blades dynamically balanced in accordance with ISO 1940 standards,
  • Front and rear protection guards conforming to EN 60335-2-80 standards,
  • With a slim, compact design incorporating motor and blades, it takes up 50% less space than comparable units.
  • Low Noise Level

Motor of Cooling Fans

  • Quality production without manual handling on high-technology CNC machines,
  • Aluminum-finned motor casing with high thermal conductivity,
  • Rotor balanced to ISO 1940 standards for extended bearing service life,
  • Class F insulation for high operating range of -40° to +70°C for coils,* 230 V / 50 Hz single-phase fan motor,**
  • 400 V / 50 Hz. Single-phase fan motor. Click for three-phase model.
  • Standards-compliant certified components,
  • IP 54 protection class (IP 55 production option available on request)
  • Variable frequency drive (VFD) control can be used with three-phase fans ***
  • Motor with external cooling fan for demanding conditions,

Considerations for Fan Selection

4 parameters should be considered when selecting a fan:
  • Required Air Flow Rate
  • Pressure Losses
  • Acceptable Noise Level
  • Electrical Power Connection Type
The air changes required for the space to be ventilated depend on the intended use of the space, the number of occupants and objects inside, and their activities. The table alongside provides the required air change rate coefficients for different environments.

Environment Air Change Rate
Auditoriums 6-8
Paint Ovens 25-50
Vault Rooms 3-6
Cinemas and Theaters 5-8
Commercial Kitchens 15-30
Foundries 8-15
Gymnasiums 4-6
Laundries 10-20
Indoor Swimming Pools 3-4
Restaurants 8-12
Conference Rooms 6-8
Waiting Rooms 4-6
Copy Rooms 10-15
Machine Rooms 10-40
Shops 4-8
Dry Cleaning 5-15
General Manufacturing Areas 4-8
Hospitals 8-12
Laboratories 8-15
Normal Activity (non-smoking) 29 m³/h
Normal Activity (smoking) 58 m³/h
Light Activity 45 m³/h
Heavy Activity (industrial work areas) 60 m³/h

The amount of air per person in living and working spaces depending on activity level can help determine the required air flow rate.

Based on the information provided above, the required air flow rate is determined as follows.

  • Q [ m³/h ] = Air change rate coefficient (1 hour) × Space volume (m³)

Or

  • Q [ m³/h ] = Number of people × Air flow rate required per person
After determining the required air flow rate for the space, an appropriate duct design (taking noise and air velocity criteria into account) should be made and pressure losses calculated. The fan type (axial, radial, roof, smoke extraction, etc.) should be decided based on the operating environment, and the appropriate fan should be selected from the relevant fan curve according to the determined flow rate–static pressure pair. To briefly illustrate the above with an example: an office has 5 employees, a ceiling height of 2.6 meters, and a floor area of 50 m², giving a volume of 2.6 × 50 = 130 m³. The air change rate coefficient given for an office in the table is 4–8; let's take 5. 130 × 5 = 650 m³/h air requirement. If we assume normal activity in the office, 5 people × 29 m³ = 145 m³ for employees, giving a total of 650 + 145 = 795 m³/h air requirement.

Fan selection is also made based on this flow rate requirement.

After completing the flow rate calculations, the installation location of the fan should be determined. Where will the fan be mounted — ceiling, wall, chimney, or ventilation duct? Another consideration is the voltage of the electrical supply to the fan. Continuing with our office example: fans in offices are generally mounted on a wall or glass. If a domestic electricity supply is used, a single-phase fan should be preferred. If it is to be used in an industrial setting, a fan operating on three-phase (380 V) power should be used.
