What Is a Cooling Exhaust Fan?

Fans are similar to pumps but, unlike pumps, they pressurize and move gas rather than liquid. Fans are the most important equipment used both for the air intake and discharge functions required by industrial processes and for the ventilation of residential buildings, workplaces, and especially communal living spaces.
Industrial equipment operating at high levels generally produces excess heat. These systems may carry a risk of overheating if suitable cooling equipment is not used.
Overheated equipment can create a number of risks, including reduced equipment performance, premature component and lubricant degradation, general system failure, and ultimately the possibility of fire and other safety hazards for users and facility personnel. Industrial cooling exhaust fans are fans produced to eliminate these risks. They cool the hot air in your facility while enabling your equipment and personnel to operate more efficiently.

Where Are Cooling Exhaust Fans Used?

  • Warehouses, stockrooms, and storage facilities,
  • Garages and public buildings, agricultural buildings,
  • Commercial greenhouses,
  • Large workshops,
  • Paint shops,
  • Factories,
  • Environments containing dust and vapor,
  • Cooling of industrial machinery (welding machines, transformers, compressors)

Fan Housing and Blade Sections of Cooling Exhaust Fans

  • Casing and fan blades made of cold-drawn, high-quality DKP sheet steel,
  • High corrosion resistance with environmentally friendly electrostatic epoxy powder coating,
  • Impeller blades dynamically tested to ISO 1940 standard,
  • Front and rear protection guards conforming to EN 60335-2-80 standards,
  • Slim, compact design with motor and impeller takes up 50% less space than comparable models,
  • Low Noise Level

Motor of Cooling Exhaust Fans

  • Quality production without manual handling on high-technology CNC machines,
  • Aluminum-finned motor housing with high thermal conductivity,
  • Rotor balanced to ISO 1940 standards for extended bearing service life,
  • High operating temperature range of −40 °C to +70 °C for windings with insulation class F,* 230 V / 50 Hz single-phase fan motor,
  • 400 V / 50 Hz. Single-phase fan motor. Click for three-phase model.
  • Standards-compliant certified components,
  • IP 54 Protection Class (IP 55 production available on request)
  • Variable frequency drive (VFD) control usable with three-phase fans
  • Motor with external cooling fan for demanding conditions,

Considerations for Fan Selection

4 parameters should be considered when selecting a fan:
  • Required Air Flow Rate
  • Pressure Losses
  • Acceptable Noise Level
  • Electrical Power Connection Type
The air changes required for the space to be ventilated depend on the intended use of the space, the number of occupants and objects inside, and their activities. The table alongside provides the required air change rate coefficients for different environments.

Environment Air Change Rate
Auditoriums 6-8
Paint Ovens 25-50
Vault Rooms 3-6
Cinemas and Theaters 5-8
Commercial Kitchens 15-30
Foundries 8-15
Gymnasiums 4-6
Laundries 10-20
Indoor Swimming Pools 3-4
Restaurants 8-12
Conference Rooms 6-8
Waiting Rooms 4-6
Copy Rooms 10-15
Machine Rooms 10-40
Shops 4-8
Dry Cleaning 5-15
General Manufacturing Areas 4-8
Hospitals 8-12
Laboratories 8-15
Normal Activity (non-smoking) 29 m³/h
Normal Activity (smoking) 58 m³/h
Light Activity 45 m³/h
Heavy Activity (industrial workspaces) 60 m³/h

The amount of air per person in living and working spaces depending on activity level can help determine the required air flow rate.

Based on the information provided above, the required air flow rate is determined as follows.

  • Q [ m ³ / h ] = Air exchange coefficient (1 h) * Room volume (m ³)

Or

  • Q [m³/h] = Number of people × Required airflow per person
After determining the required airflow for the space, a suitable duct design should be prepared (taking noise and air velocity criteria into account) and pressure losses should be calculated. Depending on the environment in which the fan will operate, the fan type (axial, radial, roof, smoke exhaust, etc.) should be decided, and the appropriate fan should be selected from the relevant fan curve based on the determined flow rate–static pressure pair. To briefly illustrate the above and the table with an example: an office has 5 employees, a ceiling height of 2.6 m, and a floor area of 50 m², giving a volume of 2.6×50=130 m³. The air change rate value given for offices in the air change rate table was 4–8. Let us take an average of 5. 130×5=650 m³/h of air is required. If we assume normal activity levels in the office, 5 people × 29 m³ = 145 m³ of air is needed for the employees, giving a total air requirement of 650 + 145 = 795 m³/h.

Fan selection is made according to this flow rate requirement.

After completing the flow rate calculations, the location where the fan will be installed should be determined. Where will the fan be installed — on the ceiling, wall, chimney, or ventilation pipe? Another consideration is the voltage of the electrical supply to the fan. Taking the office as our example, fans in offices are generally mounted on a wall or window. If standard residential electricity is to be used, a single-phase fan should be selected. For use in an industrial setting, a fan operating on three-phase (380 V) power should be used.
