What is a pneumatic system?

Pneumatic systems are automation systems that convert the energy of compressed air into linear or rotary motion. Compressed air produced by a compressor is conditioned, directed by valves, and converted via cylinders into movements such as pushing, pulling, clamping, and lifting. Their simple construction, fast response times, clean operation, and safe behavior under overload make them widely used in sectors including packaging, assembly, food, textiles, woodworking, and automotive.

Basic steps in system design

First, the force and stroke required by the task are determined; the cylinder bore and stroke are selected accordingly. Whether the cylinder will be single-acting or double-acting determines the valve type to be used (3/2 or 5/2). The valve actuation method is selected based on whether the system will be controlled by a PLC, sensor, push button, or mechanical trigger. Finally, an appropriate conditioning unit is placed at the beginning of the air line to ensure clean, dry, and regulated-pressure air is supplied to the system.

Maintenance and efficiency

Compressed air production is an energy-intensive process; leaks in the line cause both energy loss and slow cylinder operation. Regular inspection of connections, cleaning of conditioning unit filters, and draining of water extends the service life of the system. Silencers reduce valve exhaust noise and improve the working environment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between pneumatic and hydraulic systems?

Pneumatic systems operate with air — they are fast and clean; hydraulic systems operate with oil and generate much higher forces.

At what pressure do they operate?

Most industrial pneumatic systems operate at intermediate pressure levels. The maximum allowable pressure for each component is stated in the product information.

Why is the cylinder operating slowly?

Insufficient air pressure, leaks, a clogged filter, or a partially closed flow control valve can cause slow operation.

How is valve and cylinder compatibility ensured?

Single-acting cylinders are controlled with 3/2 valves, double-acting cylinders with 5/2 valves. Connection sizes must also be compatible.

Is a conditioning unit mandatory?

Clean and dry air directly affects the service life of valves and cylinders. For this reason, the use of a conditioning unit is recommended.

What information should I provide for a quote?

You can request a quote by providing the cylinder bore, stroke, valve type, coil voltage, and connection sizes.
