What is a pneumatic cylinder?

Pneumatic cylinders are actuators that convert the energy of compressed air into linear motion. The piston inside the cylinder moves forward or backward under the action of air, and through the shaft connected to it performs tasks such as pushing, pulling, clamping, lifting, and separating by pushing. They are used in countless automation applications such as packaging machines, assembly lines, molds and fixtures, and door and flap mechanisms.

Cylinder types

The word "magnetic" in product names indicates that the piston carries a magnet that position sensors can detect; the value marked with ⌀ indicates the cylinder bore, and the mm value indicates the stroke length.

How to select a cylinder?

The required force determines the cylinder bore: the theoretical thrust force is the product of pressure and piston area. For example, at 6 bar pressure a ⌀50 mm cylinder has a theoretical thrust force of approximately 1,180 N; the actual value is lower due to friction and pressure losses. The stroke length is selected according to the required travel distance. If the load is affected laterally or the shaft must not rotate, guided or double-rod models should be preferred. Both directions of movement in double-acting cylinders are performed by air and are controlled by 5/2 valves.

Installation and maintenance

The cylinder must be mounted in perfect alignment with the load axis; misalignment accelerates seal and bushing wear. Movement speed is regulated by flow control valves fitted to the air outlet. Using clean, dry air and protecting the shaft surface from impacts extends the cylinder's service life.

Frequently asked questions

What does a magnetic cylinder do?

Thanks to the magnet in the piston, sensors mounted on the cylinder body can detect the piston position.

How is cushioning adjusted?

Deceleration at the end of the stroke is adjusted using the adjustment screws on the cylinder end caps.

Why is the cylinder moving erratically?

Insufficient air, excessive load, or incorrect speed setting can cause jerky movement.

Why is the shaft rotating?

The shaft can rotate in standard cylinders; guided or double-rod models must be used in applications where rotation is not permitted.

Can the seal kit be replaced?

Seal kits can be renewed on some models. A kit matching the model code must be selected.

What is required for air preparation?

It is recommended to install a conditioner at the beginning of the line.
