Product description

What Is a Centrifugal (Snail) Fan?

These are fans in which air leaves the fan wheel at a 90° angle relative to the inlet, departing tangentially along the blades.

The advantages of centrifugal fans are as follows:

  • Wide application range
  • High-temperature, corrosive, and abrasive environment applications
  • Easier access to the motor compared to direct-drive axial fans
  • More efficient and quieter operation, especially in locations with variable flow resistance
  • High structural stability
  • Very high pressures and flow rates
In scroll-type centrifugal fans, the air movement generated by the pressure differential does not flow in the axial direction but in the direction of centrifugal force. The flow rate and pressure ranges they provide are the determining factors in their classification.

Where Are High-Pressure Centrifugal Fans Used?

High-pressure centrifugal fans, such as this product, are fan units used to convey lightly granular materials. They generally operate at low capacities but with high pressure values.
  • Iron and steel,
  • Glass,
  • Chemical,
  • Cement,
  • Processes requiring high pressure in facilities such as mining.
  • The most common application is boilers for central heating systems.

Things to Consider When Selecting a Fan;

4 parameters should be considered when selecting a fan:
  • Required Air Flow Rate
  • Pressure Losses
  • Acceptable Noise Level
  • Electrical Power Connection Type
The air changes required for the space to be ventilated depend on the intended use of the space, the number of occupants and objects inside, and their activities. The table alongside provides the required air change rate coefficients for different environments.
Environment Air Change Rate
Auditoriums 6-8
Paint Ovens 25-50
Vault Rooms 3-6
Cinemas and Theaters 5-8
Commercial Kitchens 15-30
Foundries 8-15
Gymnasiums 4-6
Laundries 10-20
Indoor Swimming Pools 3-4
Restaurants 8-12
Conference Rooms 6-8

Dry Cleaning 5-15
General Manufacturing Areas 4-8
Hospitals 8-12
Laboratories 8-15
Normal Activity (non-smoking) 29 m³/h
Normal Activity (smoking) 58 m³/h
Light Activity 45 m³/h
Heavy Activity (industrial work areas) 60 m³/h
The amount of air per person in living and working spaces depending on activity level can help determine the required air flow rate.

Based on the information provided above, the required air flow rate is determined as follows.

  • Q [ m³/h ] = Air change rate coefficient (1 hour) × Space volume (m³)
  • Or
  • Q [ m³/h ] = Number of people × Air flow rate required per person
  • After determining the required air flow rate for the space, a suitable duct design should be made (taking noise and air velocity criteria into account) and pressure losses should be calculated. Depending on the environment in which the fan will operate, the fan type (axial, radial, roof, smoke exhaust, etc.) should be decided upon, and the appropriate fan should be selected from the fan curve based on the determined flow rate–static pressure pair. To briefly illustrate the above text and table data with an example: 5 people work in an office with a ceiling height of 2.6 m and a floor area of 50 m². The volume is 2.6 × 50 = 130 m³. The air change rate coefficient table gives a value of 4–8 for an office. Let us take it as 5. 130 × 5 = 650 m³/h air requirement. Assuming the 5 people work with normal activity, 5 people × 29 m³ = 145 m³ of air is needed for the occupants, giving a total of 650 + 145 = 795 m³/h air requirement.

Fan selection is also made based on this flow rate requirement.

After completing the flow rate calculations, the installation location of the fan should be determined. Where will the fan be mounted — ceiling, wall, chimney, or ventilation duct? Another consideration is the voltage of the electrical supply to the fan. Continuing with our office example: fans in offices are generally mounted on a wall or glass. If a domestic electricity supply is used, a single-phase fan should be preferred. If it is to be used in an industrial setting, a fan operating on three-phase (380 V) power should be used.
