What is a column pipe?

A column pipe is the pipe that supports a borehole submersible pump and carries the pressurized water from the pump up to the wellhead. PVC column pipes are manufactured in standard lengths and are extended to the required well depth by threading them together. Their lightweight construction makes installation and removal easier; they do not corrode, so they do not affect water quality, and they offer a long service life.

Installation recommendations

When joining pipes, make sure the threads are clean and fully engaged. Always use a steel safety rope to support the pump and pipe; do not rely on the pipe alone to carry the entire load. Secure the cable along the pipe at regular intervals with clamps. At the wellhead, support the pipe with a wellhead flange kit and connect it to the surface installation using a flexible fitting. Avoid leaving pipes exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods before installation, as this can make the material brittle.

Frequently asked questions

PVC column pipe or galvanized pipe?

PVC pipes are now widely preferred because they are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and easy to remove. Galvanized pipes are heavy and prone to corrosion, though they are still found in some older installations.

How many meters of pipe do I need?

You need as much pipe as the depth at which the pump will be suspended, plus the required adapters. Round up the total length to account for the standard pipe lengths available.

Why do pipe threads leak?

Dirty threads or threads that are not fully tightened are the most common causes. Clean the threads before connecting and apply the sealing method recommended by the manufacturer.

What is the difference between 15 bar and 21 bar pipes?

The pressure class indicates the internal pressure the pipe can safely withstand. A higher pressure class is selected for deep wells and pumps with a high max. head.

Can column pipe be reused?

Pipes that remain in good condition after the pump is removed can be reused. Pipes with cracked or worn threads should be replaced.
