How does an air-operated diaphragm pump work?

In air-operated (pneumatic) double diaphragm pumps, compressed air alternately pushes two diaphragms connected by a shaft. While one diaphragm discharges liquid, the other draws it in; ball check valves ensure the flow moves in one direction only. There is no electric motor, so the risk of sparking is low, making these pumps a frequent choice in flammable environments. If the operating environment has ATEX requirements, product documentation must be checked separately.

Strengths of diaphragm pumps

Material selection

The casing material is selected according to the fluid: aluminum and cast iron casings for oils, paints, and solvents; stainless steel casings for food, chemical, and hygienic applications; and plastic casings such as polypropylene for acids and bases. The diaphragm and ball material (such as PTFE, rubber, and thermoplastic elastomers) must also be compatible with the liquid. Models described as hygienic are designed for food and beverage production.

Installation and air preparation

Supplying the pump with clean, dry air significantly extends the life of the air valve. For this reason, fitting an air conditioner unit (filter and regulator) to the air line is recommended. A flexible connection can be used on the discharge line to reduce vibration. Where electrical operation is preferred, electric diaphragm pumps are an alternative.

Frequently asked questions

How much air does a diaphragm pump consume?

Consumption depends on the pump size, required flow rate, and pressure. Select the compressor based on the manufacturer's air consumption figures.

What does it mean if liquid is coming from the pump exhaust?

This usually indicates that one of the diaphragms has ruptured; stop the pump and replace the diaphragm.

Can sludge and paint be pumped?

Yes; solid-particle and viscous liquids are among the typical applications for these pumps.

Where can I find spare parts?

For diaphragm retainers, air valve repair kits, and gaskets, see the diaphragm pump spare parts category.

Why does the pump stop?

Contamination or icing in the air valve, insufficient air pressure, or a blocked line can cause the pump to stop.
